You can put it in anything. It can't hurt to at least put something orange next to it, though, to better attract the oriole.

I've seen the oriole in my front garden. It's a small area with just plants... no trees or anything tall to put a dish in. Can I just put the saucer on the ground or should I put it somewhere else? Thanks for your reply.

Lisa It would be better if it were up off the ground. I have a little table made out of branches and a piece of trunk for the top. You could put the jelly right on top of orange halves. That's how I got mine to eat it.

Hi Lisa .....love the s/n LOL it can be as simple as cutting off the top of an orange and scooping it out, fill will Jelly and hang from a tree with a coat hanger. Don't want it on the ground...besides leaving the bird at risk for attack from cats it gets way to full of ants.

I hung an oriole feeder (similar to a hummingbird feeder) from a shepherd's hook. The feeder had a place for nectar, oranges, and jelly. I, too, saw them flying around my yard, but it took a few weeks before they actually landed to eat. No takers on the nectar or oranges, so now I just put out the jelly.

I just reread my first post and can't believe the typing errors. In a rush, as always. Anyway, I had a few trees taken down in the spring and saved a beautiful piece that I was going to use as a planter. I think I'll try placing the bowl on it (I bought an orange bowl today for good measure).
I can't believe how easy it is to attract a variety of birds. I put up one feeder and one blue bird house. I now have woodpeckers, blue birds, blue jays, cardinals and a variety of others. What a great hobby. Any secrets to attracting a wider variety? I've always wanted to try a purple martin house, but not sure if my yard is appropriate. I have about 1.5 acres, surrounded by trees on two side. I'm bordering a farm with lots of open land. Anyone think it would be worth a try?

You will also need to get a good PM site as they have their own requirements.Someone here will send you one. I dont offer them housing because I am to wooded but I do the Blues and all the other cavity nesters. A nice water feature is the best way to get more birds. UUUMMMM typing errors? That website is great! Just a little overwhelming at 1am. I'm definately going to dive into it tomorrow. I do have a ceramic bird bath. Have never seen a bird near it, but maybe I'm not watching closely enough.

It's probably to deep put pebbles in the bottom and some flat rocks for the smaller birds to stand on.

I would try to buy organic marmalade, ie that which is made with sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS.) HFCS isn't good for people and I doubt it could be any better for birds.

Doesn't marmalade attract bees and hornets? We have many orioles here and I've thought of putting out food for them, but am afraid of attracting stinging insects. My hummingbird feeders attract only the birds, but they do have bee guards....

i made a platform from a flat board with a nail drove through the middle from the bottom. I tied nylon strings to nails in each side of the board and tied the other ends of the strings together and hung it over a branch. I put a half orange pushed down on the nail. as they pecked and drank part of the orange i would fill the rind with fresh bottled orange juice that they sipped. I ran out of oranges one day and was not going to town. So i put a plastic lid on the platform and filled it with orange juice and put a couple of ripe cherrys in it too. they are
line up waiting their turns at the feeder,
