OT female oriole feeding babies in the nest

I am so happy to be able to watch this right from my deck. The nest is at eye level about 15' away. I hope I get to see the babies fledge!!!!

Lucky you! Are they timid? Or do they just ignore you? Do you offer them jelly & such?
Friends of mine had orioles nesting in a willow just outside their kitchen door. To keep them from being disturbed, they barricaded the door from inside, and roped off the entrance from the outside with bright yellow tape POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS. For those few weeks, a passerby might have thought a crime had really been committed there! My friend was a great photographer and got some extreme closeup shots of the oriole family from the kitchen window.

Bluebars, I am very lucky!! I can sit on the deck and they come to the nest and feed the babies. Yes, I offer grape jelly but the parents won't come and get the jelly if I am sitting to close to it. They will come if I am at the other end of the deck.

Your friends and the barricade...LOL, but I don't blame them!

I am just thrilled to have them nest so close.

these *&*(%$% crows we have everywhere. Don't dis the crows! They alerted me to the bald eagle about to make lunch out of my favorite hen. Miraculously, she survived with nothing but a lot of feathers, and a couple of quarter sized patches of skin missing on her back. I had no idea she was still alive when I charged the thing, and made it drop her. If they hadn't been harassing the eagle, and if I hadn't gone out to see why the crows were making so much noise, she would have been a goner.

How wonderful , I would definatly send this story and photos to Cornell http://www.nestwatch.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=577 , It would be a great story to put on the Cornell nestwatch site. I would think they would still be feeding it, they won't forget there is still one in there. They do sometimes withold food though to try to get them to fledge. Last year however I did find one fully feathered TRES baby in the nestbox when I went to clean out the boxes. I think it just couldn't get up and out the hole and the adults must have given up on it. The box did not have kerfs (built by some boy scouts) but it never caused a problem before, hole isn't more than 5 inches from the floor. I suppose I should have added some kind of ladder to the inside to prevent this from happening again but I never did. Most of our boxes here have six nestlings each, only three with five, one has seven. Last checked that one on day 12 and they all looked fine, I am hoping all seven make it and fledge, they are on about day 15 today so later this week they should be fledging. I have one box on day 17 right now and they are majorly peeking. They are in Gilwood boxes so multiple babies can look out at the same time. Donna

ttodd, Spectacular close-up shots....simply amazing! amysrq, Isn't it wonderful? As many times as I've watched it, I never get tired of it. Nature's wonders. goldgirl, There have been a few times I've sat down to watch my Hummer visitors, only to notice a couple hours later how quickly time had gone by and I hadn't accomplished a darn thing. Watching those little jewels becomes addictive....be careful! :) Mine have gotten so used to me being outside working the gardens, they don't even flinch when I walk by. In fact, a few actually follow me around and some actually look right at the camera when I'm ready to take the shot. Addictive, I tell ya. In a goooood way. :) For all the Hummer Juicy I make, I need to take out stock in C & H Pure Cane Sugar. Coming in for a Landing. I'm changing the plants in an old iron bird cage and my visitor sits on the bird cage door, watching what I'm doing. This guy just kept fluttering in front of me, checking out the thing in my hand....my camera. Lunch Bell for the Newbies. I added color to the Juicy so they would see it. After they learn where it's at, I no longer add the color. I'm stringing some Morning Glory in through Chix Wire of a homemade topiary. This little Jewel stuck by me all day so I called him "My Groupie".

You stinker! You just had to get one that built closer than mine! LOL And you said you had only ever seen 2 nests! I bring you Oriole luck and you bring me HOSPs! LOL! Thank God they never came back! BUT the Redtail brought her baby by the other day. She is welcome to a chipmunk or two but not my birds. When did you find this nest? (am off to Iowa in the AM but will check in while there).

Hey Lisa, I knew you would say something about the Oriole. I just had to have mine closer!!!

I just noticed it yesterday. I was so thrilled. I was surprised that they would build so close to the feeders and all the birds that gather to eat.

I hope I see the babies fledge. The parents are pretty tame. They will come and feed the babies when I am sitting on the deck.

I did NOT bring you hosp.!!! They were there before I came to visit you. LOL I wouldn't do that to you :)

Can I borrow your redtail? I have so many rabbits and they are eating all of my bushes I planted for the birds!!!
