Looking for Urban bluebirding suggestions.

Hi guys,

I live in a city of approximately 12,000 population. The area i currently live in is a 40 year old established subdivision with scattered mature trees. Less than a mile north of my house is open farm land with some wooded tree growth. The area I live have a backyard of around .25 acres or about the size of a basketball court. My backyard is surrounded by houses on all three sides and a privacy fence dividing that. I have several bird feeders including a meal worm feeder. I also supply a birdbath with running water. I have built several bluebird boxes which I have placed around the yard over last winter. This past spring i also research and placed a few berry bushes that are associated with attracting bluebirds. Unfortunately still no luck. Looking for any suggestions or ideas that I might have missed. Thanks for your time.

ken, thanks so much for taking the time!! The camera angle is from our family room where we spend most of our time in winter. Winter here is super, super long. And it doesn't snow much so it's just depressing. I would definitely give up the tall tree thing (or plant a deciduous tall tree) to get a rich looking four season back yard. Or just keep those stupid pines and underplant if necessary. I think that pink tree is a hydrangea paniculata (the blooms come out white then turn rosy). And then all the red stuff is burning bush. The previous owners also REALLY liked that. But burning bush is all going to come out, it's doing terrible. Lawn space meh--but hosta space is important! But I have a few big hosta beds (compared to my tiny lot size). My issue is, unlike a true conifer lover, I don't really have the patience to baby something from 1 foot to four feet for ten years. Or I would buy something bigger AND also the interesting babies to put in front. But am happy to pay specialty prices for interesting, appropriate, vigorous plants. PS All my neighbours have tall trees so no one will complain if I plant something sizeable. But that doesn't mean I have to. This post was edited by robotropolis on Wed, Apr 30, 14 at 15:42

There are some nice Catalpa trees in the Portland metro area as well as Milwaukie. they are pretty, but you do have to re shape them every few years or the limbs sort of self prune from the weight of the leaves. They are really nice old trees and you can shape them to some extent. Be prepared to have to prune extensively every other year or so. The "Hazelnut" or Filbert, to this 3rd generation Oregonian has some draw backs as well. It is not a tree that makes a long standard trunk, then branches out, rather the crotch of the tree is naturally about 3 ft off the grond frequently. You may find some that are more to a taller standard, but they tend to limb out wide and low. this makes them good for a kids fort, or an orchard, but not tall and narrow, unless you can train up a "sucker" which will shoot up tall and straight off the base of the trunk. These are usually not seen as desirable, and removed, how ever, if one does "get away from you" they tend to be taller than the parent tree. these trees must be trimed, suckers cut, sprayed for bugs, unless you never intend to eat the nuts, but leave them all for the birds, and I am not sure if you can find anything in an organic for this. It is a beautifull tree, but I doubt its what you want. Elderberry trees that are nice, but so far the crab apple seems like it might be your best bet. you can get a dwarf, and that will help some.

Hi Judy- So glad you have 4 eggs now! Sure hope they become chicks! Did that egg end up being cracked? My understanding is that if the eggs are super fragile, the female may not be consuming enough Calcium. Don't know if you feed mealworms, but they're high in protein, but low in Calcium. During nesting season, I've been sprinkling my mealworms with calcium carbonate powder. Should help the mom to lay stronger eggs & the nestlings to grow stronger bones & wings to fly. As you have so much experience, you've probably not run into fragile eggs before- don't think they crack very much from what I've heard (unless low calcium, handling, or foul play is involved). Hopefully, your eggs are ok though. I thought one of mine may have been cracked, but it was just a piece of human hair running across it. Thanks for info on nesting cam. Ok...here's how the dimensions work: The building envelope permits a maximum width of around 26', give or take (lot is 36' wide and has a 5' setback for each sideyard). If the house is 1' above grade, and the floor to floor height is 10' for each floor, the second floor plate height is at elevation 20' (1' above grade, plus 2 floors at 9' ceiling height, plus 1' structure for second floor), before any pitched roof or parapet in the case of a flat roof. So 26' wide and 20' feet tall...there's a modest horizontal proportion built in to whatever design there may be. But it's modest, and not a strong horizontal proportion as was common for most of Mr. Wright's work and the Prairie Style. So, it's possible to have something which recalls Prairie Style, but it's going to take a lot of site specific creativity, and not likely something which can be found in a plan factory pre-designed house. Find the best architect you can who understands and is proficient in Prairie Style in urban infill lots. Good luck!

Hi Bob. I am new to the forum and was reading through some of the threads. I wanted to check in and see what type of Bluebird Nest Boxes you erected. Bluebirds can be very particular about their houses and feeders. The location of their nest boxes is critical to success. Bluebirds prefer big, open spaces in a pesticide free location with scattered trees or fences for perching. Late February and early March is the time to set up bluebird nesting boxes if you want to encourage these birds to make a home in your yard. This may seem a little premature, but late winter and early spring is when male scouts are out looking for a place to nest. Glad to see you join. The box specifications that I use are from the Missouri Department of Conservation specifically for Eastern Bluebirds. I live in a subdivision where the houses are on .25 acre lots. So not very big. My paticular house has a privacy fence for the back yard which is the size of two basketball courts put side by side. So I know I'm fighting an uphill battle. The positive things are: I live within one mile of open farmland which I have seen several bluebirds. So I'm attempting to draw them in. I actually put the three bluebird houses I build out in March of this year. Had quite a fight trying to keep the House Sparrows out. Appreciate the link. We'll see what next season brings.
