OT/ Kenn and any other Canon S?IS owners

I just knew a new one would be coming out, just found this on the Canon site, Canon SX10 IS it has a 20x optical zoom!! I didn't even read when it actually comes out but this is what I have been waiting to buy. I really think these cameras take great shots without the bulk of the SLR's. This will be on my xmas list for sure......

20x....that is amazing!! I guess you were smart to wait. Did you know it was in the works? I'm still learning the ropes of the S5. Is this the same as the S2,3,5 but with more zoom?

Hi Donna and Tammy,

I've only read a little beyond the Canon press release on their new (not yet available) SX ultra-zoom models. But I think the jury is still out on these cameras. The SX-1 will have a new sensor which might offer real image quality improvements. But the SX-1 will be more expensive than previous Sx-IS models, and currently there are no plans to sell it in the US. The SX10 model is apparently a bit less of a technical advance.

But perhaps more importantly, the move to a 20X zoom lens in these new models may actually be a step backward rather than forward for those of us who would use the camera for birding. The maximum aperture for this new lens when zoomed is f5.7 (very slow compared to the f3.5 of the Sx-IS's 12X lens). This means even less light at the long end (where our birds live), and thus slower shutter speeds, which is already a big limitation in all superzooms of every brand.

Soooo... Personally, I wouldn't pre-order just yet. I will be very interested to read the reviews once this new camera is available... but...

We now use both the S3 and the S5, and imo they are both great cameras for the money, but neither is any significant advance over the other (or the S2). I have my doubts that the SX-10 will offer birders any real improvement over the Sx-IS models equipped with a good TC lens.

I could be wrong.

I've had a couple issues there myself. I guess there are some issues with how they came across because I did spend some time crying about it off and on. I thought, kind of like Lisa, that I was being too sensitive. Now, with all the different opinions, it definitely seems they have some problems with how they communicate to their members. I still think their hearts are in the right place, but they should work with how they communicate what they need to, or basically, they need to work on how they come across to others. Cody used the word "reprimand" which is very much how they come off. Anyways, Lisa, I'm glad you've successfully completed so many "trades" there as they call them. I've been trading there for over a year and haven't done near that many! There are some great members there as you get to know the individuals. I'm glad I blew off the issues there to be able to get to know some of the great gardeners/people in the group. Blessings, Angela

Sorry Mindstrong, you don't know what you are talking about---but I do. The majority of the "big dogs" use Canon. LOL!!!! What "big dogs" do you know? Apparently, they are not as big as you think they are. LOL!! Many National Geographic photographers still shoot with FILM cameras, which are much different than DIGITAL cameras--and they shoot in chrome. And, the ones who shoot digital, shoot with Canon. The archival aspects of the present digital process prevent many photographers from using digital when they don't have astringent deadlines. Sad to say, but, National Geographic photographers are not" cutting edge" by any means. Most are very traditional, which means, NIKON. No "trash talking" here. When the staffs of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe and every other major newspaper use Canon, you know Canons are the best, otherwise, why would they risk shooting with inferior hardware, like the horrible Nikon system? The difference between Nikons and Canon is well documented in professional circles. Ask any "real" professional and they will tell you that Nikon sold-out to the amateur ranks many years ago, that Canons are the best. Most magazine photographers are contract photographers or freelancers and 80 percent of them use Canon. I know what I'm talking about: I'm one of them. Canon digitals are the best in the consumer market too!

Judy.....I'm even working on a family tree quilt to combine both hobbies....but, I've been putting if off, though, dreading putting on all those little white pieces of fabric with names and dates....but, I'm going to get back to it after the current top if finished, and that shouldn't be long. I'm also including appliqued family buildings....I've finished the Newlin Mill and a Quaker Meeting house, both from Chester Co, PA...haven't decided on both maternal bldgs yet. One will be Berry Plain, but I'm not sure about the other..., that's part of the fun, though....thinking and planning. All my families came to either PA or Virginia, the earliest a Capt Thomas Graves, was on the 1607 ship to Jamestown..the other Va folks came in the mid 1600s. My only NE emigrant was the Rev. Francis Doughty, who came to Taunton, Mass, but got the boot from the Puritans....they didn't agree with his 'take' on baptism. He then went to New Amsterdam, and later to MD and Va. My father's families were Quakers and came to PA with Penn....several on The Welcome with Penn (sort of like the Pa version of the Mayflower!!!) Fascinating stuff, I think....but, like chocolates....you can't eat just one....!
