omg...finally saw mom and daddy blue!

The long wait is over! Since I haven't seen the blues at all after the second nesting, I was beginning to give up hope. The second group fledged on 6/19 and just disappeared after that, though I have looked for them just about everyday. This morning, I thought I saw a blue, took the binocs and spotted a beautiful male. Then not five minutes later, he and his mate were perched on my neighbor's roof and then Daddy flew to the nestbox, perched on top then decided to take a peek inside, while Mom sat on top of my privacy fence..then both flew on off!

I have no idea if this is my little couple but what a thrill to have seen them...finally! Will keep my fingers crossed that they stick around!

Oooh exciting Donna! Hope they stick around for awhile! My Blue family left over a week ago, not to return. However yesterday I had a female blue eating out of my mealworm feeder. I do not think it is from the family we had here this summer, they always came in as a family. I am starting to think it is the female from last summer. She is with a male and they are vigourously going in and out of nestboxes and I have only seen the female come up and eat, not the male. Last years female lost her mate at the end of the season before they left for the winter. At least now some of my waxworms are getting eaten since I bought 500 just before my family left. Last years family (only one surviving fledgling) would come and eat the waxworms only and leave the mealworms. This one at first ate mealworms since I had taken the waxworms out but as soon as I saw her I put out more waxworms and she is now eating the waxworms and not touching the mealworms at all. My family from this summer would usually eat some of each when they visited the feeder. So anyway, I am with you having fun watching a bluebird pair, not knowing really for sure if they have been here before or not.

I've not had any mealworms for quite some time. Do you think if I order some, it might entice them to stay around? Last Oct. was the first time I ever spotted the blues checking out the nestbox...at least five or six..then beginning in January, the field narrowed to one couple and nestbuilding began on 3/13. If I remember correctly, I didn't start feeding mealworms until around Feb.

Donna..you seem to have so much "blue" activity..what fun!!! Can't wait until nesting season!

Hey Donna, I recall someone else saying the same thing this year that while the mom was building the dad was taking stuff out. I have/had Blues nestbuilding for the last week, started a week ago Sunday. I thought the nest looked done by about Thursday but saw her taking stuff in yet on Saturday but not anymore after that. I did see the Dad go in there on Sunday and take a blade of grass out and then sit on the top of the nestbox pecking at it. I think he is getting impatient for eggs or something. LOL! I saw him do this twice now where he went in and then came out with just a tiny bit from the nest in his beak. I was thinking maybe I had an egg today as they are staying pretty close in the yard for once but not yet. Of course I am gone tomorrow and that will probably be the day, I want to get that sparrow spooker up asap as I keep seeing a female HOSP in the yard however I haven't been able to get any shots at her with the bb gun. I did however get Dad to find the dish of mealworms today, it is just on the grass under a tree. He has come and eaten a few several times but so far hasn't shown or shared with mom. Oh and I have TRES babies today!! I looked so quickly I am not sure how many hatched but there were six eggs and now there are only one or two and a pile of hatchlings. Oh soo right lisa! I wasn't going to try to watch the fledging.. I just happen to see one sticking out pretty far. Ran and got the camera and within the hour I saw three taking their first flight... it still makes me weepy! I got tons of pics with babies in and out, on the ledge, then just a few with flying out.. it's so well worth the time you may spend. I had work screaming to be done and I wouldn't change a thing.. Mac60, how long has she been gone? Is there a possibility she's still around, but a little scarce and perhaps is letting Dad do most of the work? The reason I ask is that although my Mama didn't disappear completely, Dad was doing most of the feeding several days before fledging...a little older than your babies are now. A couple of times, I thought she had left for good, but I guess she was taking some time off and letting Dad do all the work. Sorry to hear about Mom and I'll keep my fingers crossed that she is safe somewhere. Kudos to your Daddy blue who now appears to be a single parent. I'm sure the babies will be fine. Donna

finchelover, If he is coming back each day,he is interested,Look for them in the morning,that is when there will be the most activity.The best thing for you to do is make sure no House Sparrows try to use the box.
