Proud Daddy Blue

Today is the day before I leave for vacation, and it may be the last time I see my Blues this season (hopefully they bring the fledglings back!). The babies are 12 days old. I just hung up my mealworm feeder on our deck and he has already found them. This gives me AMAZING up close views of him (the mom hasn't found them yet)! I am still praying that all goes well while I'm on vacation. I will let you guys know how things go when I get back!

Nice shot Ken! is someone putting the mealworms out for you while you are gone? Have a good vacation, praying your Blues stay safe and fledge fine!

I have a Big Daddy, which was not much for 8 or so years, except this spring. Blue Angel seems to be a fast grower, I have two of those. I just bought a Blue Mammoth, in a pot with several eyes so I do not have to wait so long. The Hosta Library states : "...The foliage mound reaches a generous 54 x 48", and the plant is a rapid grower. The pale lavender flowers bloom early and it is considered to be floriferous. Van Wade recommends 35% shade but says the plant will accept as much as 85% sun. The leaves are a light blue, cordate, and have excellent substance. "Nearly" slug-proof. " I can not wait for a 36 to 48 inch tall powder blue mount of Blue Mammoth. Pictures in the Hosta Library show no stems, seems to be a winner. Deedee, I know how you feel! I lost about 3 FEMALE bluebirds in one season! One was dive bombed by a hawk right in front of my face! Dove out of nowhere from the sky and took off with her. Horrible thing to witness. And it was in March of last year. Infact, today I came home to see all the birds mobbed up and then saw a Cooper's hawk soar through my back yard...It's the neighbors...they feed cheap bird seed. Ugh. Lisa, either my blues are smarter or yours are...it's in the 30's here and they're STILL around! The Swallows took off...they can't survive in this. Anyway the season ended on a great note with 3 nests fledgling over 2 trails for a total of 10 bluebirds. Nothing amazing but I used to never have a successful nest...when I 1st started I had horrible luck. Each year has been better and more productive and everywhere you go out here there's a bluebird perched atop the powerlines.

Michelle, I paid dearly for 4 thousand live mealworms that at least 4 pair of blues have totally ignored. Took some to work for a coworker, some to my sister for her pair and for my two sets-ALL totally ignored. I set up a special feeder two weeks ago so it can't be that they aren't used to it. I sit and wait, binocs in hand-no go. Figure when there are hungry nestlings, mom and pop may change their minds. Other than that, I will freeze the mealies and add them to the crumble I make this winter. Fickle buggers these blues. LOL Linda

Yeah, unfortunately I don't know how to show the picture directly on the thread without a size limit because it would have been much clearer. We do have someone who is supposed to put mealworms out for us while we are away, however I don't think she really likes mealworms, haha. Hopefully when we get back, the whole family will have a reunion at the feeder.

I hate to move in on this site but I have a question. The last couple days I saw bluebird peeking in on a birdhouse I recently placed in my memory garden. I think he was investigating. Both times he came back he looked in the birdhouse. Is there something I should do so he will stay.

If he is coming back each day,he is interested,Look for them in the morning,that is when there will be the most activity.The best thing for you to do is make sure no House Sparrows try to use the box. I would suggest you google "Sparrow spooker" and learn how to make and use one.See the link below ,there is alot of info on this site.You will learn when to monitor,how to monitor,how your house should be mounted ,ETC.You can also read up on the Spooker.Bluebirds can be very rewarding if you have the right info.Please have a look at the link below.
