New group of babies

I have had three boxes up all summer and minimal interest from BB's. I was lucky enough to get Chicadees and Tree Swallows. I have not seen a BB for at least 1 1/2 months but I have heard a male singing from afar.

This weekend I was visted by 3-4 fledges and the parents!! I was so surprised. They ate in my field next to the existing boxes and stayed around for a long time. Papa sat on the boxes from time to time too. I was so delighted to see them and I have no idea where they came from.

Is there anything I can do to get them to stay close to my boxes or at least visit them and maybe stay?

It was such a delight to see them!

Hi nhsuzanne!

That is so exciting. How cool to have them bring their young. I had that experience this year too. If you can, I think it would keep them around longer if you feed them mealworms. The blues that visited me here stayed around for about a month, and taught their fledglings how to use the mealworm feeder. I'm hoping this will also be helpful to them in the future. If they need food during the winter months, they will know where to find it. And maybe your blues will remember and decide to nest there in the spring.

Welcome, Dee, Becky and Lisa, glad you could join us! I spent the day dealing with my groundhog problem. He has cleared my back flower bed, and the hole he is digging is going to undermine my shed. Time for solutions! I called Animal Control and they gave me a list of people who will come to your home and trap the critter. Great. I called the first one and he wanted to charge me $100 to trap my groundhog. I'm serious. AND, I guess as an added bonus, he said they would also take it away. NO?! Really!? And I was thinking the critter would live in that trap in my backyard forever. Sorry for the sarcasm, but come on. In any event, a friend of a friend is, hopefully, coming over sometime this week to trap the groundhog AND take him away, free of charge. This guy has already trapped 13, yes, 13 groundhogs at his home/yard this year. This wasn't the most encouraging news I've had recently. Lucky you with the nuthatches!! I wish I could get them to use nestboxes at my place. Sounds like you maybe should put up a third nestbox for the Bluebirds in case he finds a mate! Good luck!

I put mine on a post with a stove pipe between a tree I saw them in, and my deck. So they can fly down from the tree to get the mealworms. I originally had it attached to the deck rail, but the chipmunks were raiding it. Sometimes the young ones would just sit in the tree and wait for a parent to feed them. Sometimes the fledglings would sit right on top of the feeder and beg. Here are some pictures to give you an idea.

I have a dome type feeder that I bought at the Wild birds unlimited over on 101 A in Amherst,NH.It works well and you can lower the dome after they get used to it and keep the larger birds out.Good luck......Jane

Hey Jane, I live about 30 miles west of there!! I know where that store is.

The family is still around and they stay around the two houses. I am so excited and hope they will nest here next year.

This family is still here! I am thrilled. They are getting tons of bugs out of my gardens and pasture. I am enjoying watching the blue streaks dive to the ground! There have been a few altercations with Chipping Sparrows and their fledges. Not sure what that is all about!
