Hello Everyone

I just signed up and this is my first message.

I'am a animal lover by nature but I didn't set out to be a keeper of the blue birds. I had this bird house in my garage for the longest time so i decided to mount it to a half dead tree in my yard ( 2 years now ) had no birds.

I happen to talk to my nieghbor one day and he said there used to be a few blue birds around but the sparrows seem to take over. So I got on the net and found the Sialis site and o boy what i learned about the sparrow made me angry. All i can say is that the sparrows that enter my yard (ENTER VERY CAREFULLY) I recently (2 weeks ago) mounted the bird house to a pole and put it in the center of my yard. A pair of blue birds showed up the next day. (Harry & Sally) The first time in my life i had ever seen a blue bird. I couldn't believe it! Maybe they have always been around and i just never noticed them. I like to think that they found me.( that's my story and i'm sticking with it) From what I have been reading it seems that the couple are roosting. I'm going to check the box this weekend to make sure it's empty. I build a very nice blue bird box with all the safe guards including a night watchmen ha ha. I'am also in the process of building a heated roosting box and hoping i can protect more birds this winter. I need advice ....would it be wise for me to remove the present box that they are in and replace it with the new one or should i wait until winter and hope they go to the heated R box then replace the bird house in the center yard with the new BB house. These birds have become my little buddies and I don't want them harmed in anyway.

Please post a photos of your bluebird box. I would like to see one. Are they different than the ones you buy?

Wow Bunk, sounds like you're hooked on the Blues. So glad you found the Sialis site. There's so much to know before hosting the Blues. I'm trying to understand your question. Are you saying that you built a box to specs and would like to remove an old box that is not correctly sized for Bluebirds? If so, and they are not currently nesting in the box, it is fine to switch out the old and put up the new one. They will have no trouble adjusting to the switch. I have never had a heated roosting box (and I usually have Bluebirds all winter). I would think it would be no problem to have both an unheated box and a heated box available.

Seysonn, you are correct and I am learning a lot fast. I like this forum and out of all the forums I am a part of this is the best. People are very knowledgeable here and I have a lot to learn. I am glad you pointed that out so I can say thank you for not only seeds but assistance in growing them and utilzing them. John, I had two older (15 and 17 years older) brothers and whatever they could do I had to be able to do and do it better so I am accustomed to eating hot, sour, etc and not making faces if possible. I also like Thai food and the local Thai owner and cook gives me some of the special hot sauce on my food that they keep in a jar behind the register for special guests who like it hot. That is where I learned not to inhale while swallowing extremely hot food. I used some of the powder in the dish I prepared tonight and my room-mate did not need his car to get back to work as he flew out the door with flames coming from you know where and he was whimpering. I just sat there trying hard not to laugh as he danced in the road before coming back in and asking if I was trying to kill him. I told him no that I was only trying to light a fire under him so he could get his chores done. He shut up and went back to eating along with drinking almost two liters of beverage. I thought it was fairly mild. Can't wait to try the other one though I think my tongue may not survive this tasting.

Honest? I'd change the paint color. It's not right. Is it horrible OMG the neighbors are going to call and report you to the HOA? No. But it's not right. There is so much potential for the house to look stunning -- instead of just okay -- it almost makes me tear up. I'd be looking more closely @ the following: - There's too little contrast. I think it could handle more color and/or more drama on the B&B. Only question is could you. As for which paint colors specifically, I dunno. Have to think about it. - The arrangement of windows and front door has me drooling. OMG. Something fabulous and bold for the front door color. A dark purple or something like Red Miso from Martha Stewart at SW. - Maybe it makes more sense in person, but I wonder why the garage peak boards were run horizontally only with out the apex detail like on the house. The different widths of siding and boards doesn't flow together well -- a different paint color, however, could change that. The reason I question it is because the windows on the house are so well-done and so balanced and that side of the house is telling a lovely story of symmetry then your eye meanders over to the garage and it's a little like WTH. The garage peak dimensions look identical if not pretty darn close to the house peaks. Mirroring the vertical/horizontal boards on the garage seems like it could be a good idea --- from my seat in the virtual peanut gallery. - I'm concerned that you said that you didn't like the color of white that's up there with the siding. White windows doesn't mean you're obligated to match the trim to that window white -- unless you want to. If you wanted warmer, creamier trim you could still do that and leave the windows white. - Don't feel rushed. If someone has to wait a day or three for you to decide about the repaint, it's not going to kill them. If you need more time, tell them you need more time. (I definitely wouldn't ask, I'd tell, but I'm pushy)

Stoney...they have one of those planes at Offutt Airforce Base in Omaha... For some reason they fly it all the time. It goes over the park where my husband works to make a mock landing at the airport in Omaha . It doesn't touch the ground but almost then goes back up and on it's way. When it goes over the park, which sets on the opposite side of the Missouri river from the airport, it is very very low. It nearly parts the waters as it goes over. Quite a site to see. There is a deck out there that you can sit on and watch the planes come in. You can almost count the rivets...lol I want to try to get a picture some day. Denny explained to me why they fly that huge plane in and out all the time with no one on it...but I can't remember ....lol patti

Thanks so much for all the advice and opinions! I think the inspiration kitchen listed her granite as white spring, which is similar to bianco romano but lighter. So that's why I was focusing on the bianco romano, but I'm wondering if white spring is the same as valley white or really close at least. I think my cabinets read pretty white....maybe the cream countertops and definitely creamy island are making them look more that way along with the lighting? I do like the honed, but I think I've fallen out of love with it of late. I have 3 kiddos, and I think at first I was looking for granite to look like marble or soapstone, and now I just want it to look like granite, if that makes sense. The jet mist I looked at was polished, and I think it makes the swirliness look much deeper. I still do really like that stone, so I won't make a decision for sure yet. This is Wonderfull!...Blue Birders my hats off to you!
Bare with me...I'm a little scattered and my time is limited.
First things first .....I know this sounds lame but my internet provider for my home computer has not given me the service that I was paying for so I have no service at this time. I'm going to take care of that hopefully this weekend.I'am able to log on at work to do some things in between the work that I do. I'll post photos as soon as I start new internet service. I was concerned with the present conditions for Harry & Sally. So before I signed on to the forum I tried to contact the good people at NABS. A gentlemen there called me yesterday evening we talked for 30 min or so and gave he me advise I will always keep in mind ..... he said try not to fix things before they happen. I must have done something good if they came to that box. I'm going to make the neccesary changes to bring this box up to specs as it stays mounted to the pole.(wren guard,stove pipe) It dosen't open so I'm going to put a bigger roof (and a nest cam) on it and acess it by removing the roof for now. There is one off spec that I don't want to mess with. The hole height dim from the floor to the hole itself is .75 short of 5.75.
I peeked in the hole and noticed that there is nesting material.I will be removing the roof this weekend. I'm expecting it to be empty. It's too late for babies right?

When I get my ducks in a row.... I'll be back

It's probably too late for a new nest, but you just never know what they'll do. More than likely, they are just loading it up with stuff, which they sometimes do even when they're done nesting for the season. Sounds like you're doing everything right. I wouldn't worry about 3/4 of an inch either. Wishing you the best of luck, and come back when you can.

I am in SE Michigan.
We lost a nest in Mid July to a Downy woodpecker.
This week we had a nest built in a box in another part of our large yard. Today I peeked and we have one egg, so it is not to late.
