Update at Site #2: 4 Fledge Successfully

Wow you guys, I've been SO busy I haven't hit the forum in weeks! Been wanting to get on but usually when I have active nesting taking place I'm away from the computer.

Anyhow, remember how I mentioned a while back about the box with the HOSP before the blues moved in and layed 4 eggs?

All four hatched and I watched them grow and monitored till around the 14th or 15th day then quit out of fear for a premature fledge. Anyhow they fledged a few days ago and I even heard them calling in the trees! Man how I love to hear that raspy fledgling call! The local HOSP don't seem too happy about it...haha!

Also to note, I had a tragedy at my 2nd box there. I had a nest of 5 TRES babies and 4 were taken overnight on the the 1st week. I was stunned to find one swallow remaining. I also failed to mention that the box was within 8 feet of a tree and mounted on a 2X4 with 4" PVC top to bottom. (Non-wobbling)

However I now have both the blue's prior box and the TRES box mounted on 1" EMT with the 4" PVC baffle. I moved the TRES box several yards away on neighboring property and it now sits in the open away from trees.

BTW,here at home 1 nest of 7 TRES fledged and one of four. the nestbox with 4 has ANOTHER nest of four eggs being incubated. My blues 3rd nest attempt again failed after 14 or so days of incubation. However some days (even cooler ones) Mrs. B did not incubate at all and wasn't seen. They now moved to my other pair of boxes with the TRES and she again has 3 eggs due to hatch on the 11th. BTW I dissected those other 3 that failed to hatch. They were fertile! I found embryos in all of them! Mrs. B's poor incubation must have been to blame as they seemingly died early and I candled them and found blood veins. This is the 4th attempt at my backyard site this season and 4th to have 3 or less eggs. I haven't seen 4 or 5 eggs in a nest here the entire season. I must have a young female.

Sorry for the horrendously long post! I hope everyone is enjoying the last month or two of the nesting season. It goes too fast! This hasn't been a stellar season for me but I'm glad to have witnessed the 4 successfully fledge.

Congrats on the successful fledging of the 4 Blues! Hope they nest again for you. Sorry about all the problems with the Blues at your place and the TRES too, hope things improve there. We always mount boxes on conduit with stovepipe baffles. The stove pipe is cheap, easy to put up and does deter raccoons. I found a coon print on the bottom of one of my baffles one time, babies were safe inside the box and the coon did not try to climb up.

Congratulations on the successful fledging. Less eggs could also mean you have an older female. Sometimes as they age, they lay less eggs. While there certainly could be raccoons around here, my biggest problem is with wandering cats. They have tried their best, but they cannot get past my 8" stovepipe guards. I would not be without them. Plus I like that if ants become a problem, I can put Tanglefoot on the pole under the guard so the ants can't get up, and it can't get on the birds. You have had a challenging season so far. Thanks for all the work you do to help these birds.

It'll be neat to see what seeds come in! I know I'm going to love some of them! (That insider trading thing, you know). I will probably order a couple of things after I see what comes back, so if anyone wants to try to do a group order, I'm open to that idea (I haven't tried it before, but saving on the seed company's shipping fee would be nice) I went to a garden show last weekend, put on by the master gardeners in the adjacent county. I got seeds! They had a seed swap, and I folded up some &%#@$% paper envelopes (the rules said "no plastic." grr) I'm glad I did, as I got some neat stuff. I now have a ton of yellow tithonia, so if you notice this, Drippy, you can strike that from my list! (or just send it, I'll pass it on). I got Hungarian Daisy, which I'd never heard of, but I'm glad I grabbed it. Sunset Echinacea--does that grow true? Does anybody know? I brought some wintersowing propaganda along too, so at the seed swap table, when people started saying "poppies are so hard to start from seed..." I had my brochures ready to go! It was really nice to go to a garden-related event at this time of year, even though I have wintersowing going on too. I hope everyone is staying warm, especially you, Drippy, with your hands out of your pockets, sorting seeds!

ok, my pkg came in, it's SO AWESOME!!!! i got gloves withe the rubber thingi on the bottom (yay) and they fit a little loose, so i have moving room!! plum trees lily of the valleys-white caladiums sweet williams gee i knew i'd forget, varigated hosta unkown plant but its a beauty black raspberry and if i forgot any, she could tell ya, oh my vic! thank you so very much!! i can't wait till them tree's get taller!! then them kids can play in them like i did when i was little, that would be so fun!! i loved them all!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! i planted yesterday in our slow soft rain we've been having for like 3 day's now. but my flower beds are filling up with water! i hope my seeds don't go down hill!! it says your supposed to dig them up, but i never knew that til later, but i live in zone 5 and mine came back and i don't mulch. YET!!! it's on my list of do's when my beds get their flowers how i want them. LOL yesterday i went creek digging and found a beautiful purplish looking flower almost like a monarda or something and monarchs were all over them, so i brought a few home, i love butterfly's!!i'm taking my gloves next time, i found some wild strawberry's, i love wild stuff!! hey hazel can't wait, you been yammerin on forever about this, so we've been sitting on pins and needles waiting now get on with it!! LOL na, i'm just feeling spunky for a bit today, LOL first time in a while, LOL i just found out we won't be losing out on the rest of our grant afterall!! we can use it in appliances and stuff. cool!! in 3 more years i'm gonna be very picky!! and not choose any fast talking contractor!! Proudgm, you can save any pics to there, if it's in PB already then there is a link that says "copy to my album" and it will put it there. As far as other sites, I know there is a way to upload them to PB from your album, I think you would just put the web address in it, I've never done it before. Also as Tracy pointed out above: Vic, one thing I would like to add about setting up your own photobucket account is that you can create your own folders for it too. I have several different sub albums in my account for family pics, garden shots, then sub albums for each of my individual gardens, clematis, lilies, daylilies and then keep a separate album for all web art I find that I want to use again or edit/personalize. I like keeping them separated so if I do a search I can find what I'm looking for pretty quickly. It is a pretty neat site and they just recently expanded some of their editing tools so you can add comments and funny designs to the pictures too. I've started part 3 so we don't have to wear our mouses out scrolling the page : )

Dees & HOWRs: A Successful Fledging

I have almost the same thing on one of my trails now,To give you some backround,Box"A" was up ,dees moved in and layed eggs,Then I saw a Tree swallow checking the box,so I put up Box "B" 10-15 feet away for the Tree Swallow knowing that they will nest in a paired box.Well the Tree Swallow does not show up again.The dees eggs hatch,5 nestlings.We get some wind a rain for a few days after.I monitor the dees box,only 3 nestlings,not sure what happened(bad weather or Wren) I let things be.2-3 days later only 2 chicks.About 1 week later I see a House Wren on Box "B" singing,adding sticks,I remove sticks every day for 4-5 days.The whole time the dees are defending Box "A" very good.Well today was fledge day for the dees.I go monitor the boxes from a distance,I see dees and House Wren hanging around,As I look closer I see a Tree Swallow peeking out of Box "B" and he is not budging.The Wrens are going nuts.A few hours later ,I again monitor from a distance,I do not see the dees ,today is day 16 (Fledged) for them.Now the the Wren have moved over to Box "A".The Tree Swallows remained in the entrance of Box"B" for the rest of the day,only leaving for very short times.So,Should I continue to deter the wrens,or should I expect these two to get along OK since the boxes are so close. Not a problem and thanks Kendra and Donna. Kendra that's a good point and something that I didn't realize. I've noticed too that this Female is very friendly. I clapped from afar before checking on her eggs and she stood in the hole for a while then flew into a tree behind it. She sat there when I was at the box and watched.

I got to see the fledglings again today! They are flying very well! They fledged on day 19 and they always seem to around here, regardless of whether it's early or late in the season. However their landings are the weaker side. they flutter then land. They are moving around more and showing themselves more. Also they're getting louder and easier to find. The 1st day is always a challenge to locate them...But I've witnessed them fledge AT LEAST 3 times! Got to see at least 2 - 4 take their 1st flight in these past 4-5 seasons. I still have to get 4 more conduit pipes for the boxes here at home! The main reason I am using PVC is because I started with it non-wobling and have plenty for 2 ft baffles. I just need more pipe and hose clamps. I already have the 4 PVC caps.

BTW Kendra at site #2 2-3 neighbors have cats. One was at the bottom of the post one evening but I chased it off. I found 2 Robin Fledgings dead in the neighborhood. Thank goodness our blues are so good about keeping their young HIGH in the trees! What's wrong with these robins? They aren't so smart about the youngin like the blues. I've even had my blues outwit a hawk when it was in the same tree as the fledglings!
