Love the Goldfinches

This little fellow has been coming to my feeder the past week or so. Other years I've had about 8 goldfinches; this year I've only seen one so far. The birds have been so late in coming this year because of the unusually cold spring. Hopefully, more are still on their way. it's kind of lonely for this little guy.

Bless! Poor Goldflinch, have you seen anymore since or is he still on his lonesome? Probably just likes being around you, i've seen birds do that before.

No, he is still the only one I've seen coming around. Hopefully, he will find a mate and bring her to the feeder with him.

Be patient on the seeds, token. You should have an abundance of them by fall. I neglected to plant my annual salvias this year, and very few came up on their own, unfortunately. I am hoping last year's seeds will still be viable next year. Becky

For years I had a tube feeder full of nyjer seed, but sparrows used it more than anything else. Only once in a while I would see a goldfinch eating from it. A month ago I replaced the tube feeder with a sock. There was an immediate increase in goldfinches, with up to a few of them on it several times the first week. After one week there was a big increase in goldfinches and it has not let up yet. There are almost always 1-4 goldfinches on the sock and several times, including today, there have been 8-12 fighting each other to get a space on the sock. They are such beatiful birds and it is great to see so many of them now. I hang the sock from my tree about 6 feet from the ground and so far I've never seen any squirrels messing with it.

Thanks Rachel - I am looking forward to their return, the jelly and fruit feeder is out. Also, I really enjoyed and as always was amazed by your April birds photos. birdist, I adore my American Goldfinches here, but I cannot afford to keep them in Thistle. It has gotten so expensive. Luckily, my AGF's seem to be just fine with Black Oil Sunflower Seed. They will sometimes even choose it over thistle. BOSS is certainly much more affordable. Don't know if the Lessers would go for it, but it's worth a shot.

Well, I now have a female coming to the feeder as well as another 2 males so the numbers are slowing going up.

I've also seen a decline in goldfinches. Last year we would see at least a dozen or more. This year so far I've only seen one male and one female. We too had a cold spring but we've even seen them over the winter time. They are just not as yellow over winter. In the winter the males are a dull yellowish with a greenish tint. As it gets warmer they get more yellow.

Beautiful catch. I love the way he's cocking his head. I haven't seen a goldfinch in years, when we stayed at a bed and breakfast in upper Michigan. Even then, we didn't get this close.

I love them, too, but they're eating my beautiful yellow gerbera blossoms as soon as they open!
