window fighting

Hi everyone,

I sure hope that someone can help me. I have a male cardinal that is driving me crazy. He is fighting his reflection in the windows of my first floor. What would you do? Is it true that I can get a decal of a hawk and paste it onto the window? If so, where do I get them?

I'm surprized that this cardinal hasn't broken his beak or neck. TIA, Sam

Hi Sam, I do know about this issue, and many people here have experienced this problem with the territorial males attacking their windows. It is quite a common thing and especially among Cardinals. I can show you what my sister put onto her window in order to discourage a female Bluebird that is quite bonkers at her house! I can also give you a couple of links to check out. I am sure that there are lots of places that these decals/strips can be purchased. You may want to look around on-line to get the best prices.~~Angie

Hi Angie,
Thanks for the info, I had never heard of the strips but I ordered two and will give them a try. He's out there right now, at this point am willing to try anything. I'm also thinking that it must be bad for the birds, they devote so much time fighting the windows, they could be doing something else.

That's a hard lesson to learn! Leave them a while and see if they get new growth below the dead part. If you cut them off now they won't survive at all with no leaves. The stem may not be completely dead and have enough alive to get nutrients.

All that noise is from the guinea, konrad. There are about six hens still around but I expect most of them to stay in the woods when nesting begins. Apparently this kind of fighting is not a fight to the death; corunum on the New England Gardening forum found this reference about The Tremendous Turkey "When fighting for male dominance, the birds try to damage the secondary sexual characteristics (snood and tissues around the head) so that the bird being attacked is not attractive to females. If a male loses these fights and has damage to the snood and soft tissue around the head, usually the other males will leave him alone. In other words, turkey males do not fight to the death of the other. Sometimes death of a male does occur due to consequences of fighting but this is not the intention of the aggressive male." Claire

Great minds think alike, Claire! I'm planning a Swaziland/South Africa theme bedroom, replete with mud and kuba cloth and some African furniture! I was just at the paint store for that project when I started thinking on the way home that maybe I could do a stencil or special effect on the office walls. I like the idea of a bright rug, although a light rug might be out because I have a Chinese crested, you know, the hairless dogs that knock on the door to come inside to pee. Frankly, nobody should purchase a marble top for a bath vanity. This is always a match/ blend issue as tile and slabs come from different sources. It's virtually impossible. Marble baths benefit from a simple plain quartz top on the vanity. Knock yourself out with marble everywhere else. Porcelain and the real deal stone will ALWAYS disappoint, Every. Single. Time.
