watched my very first baby blue fledge this a.m.....: ))))

At around 8:00 i noticed the parents not acting as they normally do.....so i made it a point not to move from my porch.....even had hubby serve me coffee...lol...at around 9:30 it finally came most of the way out of the entry looking around for the parents then off he flew.....:))it was soooooo cute !!!!!...the parents immediately went to it in the tree it flew to....but.....i have a question.....the other eggs didnt hatch... :(.....and when i go close to the nest box the parent birds fly all around me still protecting it....should i go ahead and remove the nest and eggs?....i suppose one fledgling is a success but would have loved for all to hatch....

Congrats, how cool you got to see it! Too bad the others didn't hatch but yes you can go ahead and remove the nest and clean out the house. When our batch of four fledged they did stay around the nestbox for the first couple days but I cleaned it out immediately. Hope you get to see him/her around soon! I am sure it will be spoiled immensly since there is only one. I had a sole survivor last year and she was a spoiled one.

Congratulations brenda,

Seeing them fledge safely to the trees is a BIG joy of bluebirding. :)

When the last chick has fledged, the box should be cleaned. The parents will likely protest, but they'll soon discover their freshly cleaned house ... and maybe even fall in love again. ;)

It's too bad only one egg hatched, but every little blue out of the box and into the trees is terrific. I hope you get to see yours again soon and often.

Lisa: Thanks for your post. I did not see the babies last week, husband did. I have checked the nest- it is empty. I have heard some twitter out in the forest that adjoins our grounds- I'd like to think it might be the fledglings, but that may be wishful thinking. Things have been hectic lately so I have not opened the box as faithfully as in past years. There are no broken shells or feathers in box or on ground underneath. The nest was completely clean. We've never had racoons; I have heard owls very far off, but they have never appeared on the property. This box is close to our screen porch and under my office window, so I can usually monitor it by sight most of the time. This box has been in use since 2003; it's had at least one clutch per year. There's another box closer to the woods, and I've seen Mom and Dad Bluebird checking it out in the last two days. I've already cleaned out the box in question, and am going to install a baffle. It's silly to think that standing sentinel during the day will keep the nest box safe at night. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Michelle, Congrats on the baby blues fledging!!! Those wrens are a pain!!! They have taken over 2 boxes and I just keep pulling twigs. I put out grape jelly 4 the orioles. I get tons of them. This is the first time EVER I have had 3 orioles nesting in my yard. Last year there was 1 nest. They like 2 build in the choke cherry trees. That's where all 3 of them built their nest. Yesterday I could hear the babies cheeping and I kept watching, but the little buggers left when I wasn't watching. They are a joy to be around, and because they built so close to my house, they can hear my voice and they have become quite tame. I mean they will come to the jelly feeder when I'm standing on the porch. I can't wait for them to bring the babies back. If u have orioles around try grape jelly....they LOVE it!! Best of luck!! Congrats on the fledging and the second nesting. I am very anxious for the fledging of our nestlings, because it will be our first successful fledging. I'm also bummed that we will most likely be on vacation when they fledge: we are leaving for a week starting on the 11th, and today is their 8th or 9th day. I have no idea if they will stick around or not...hopefully I can atleast see them once when we get back just to be sure that they made it and are safe. Maybe mine will fledge late so I get to see them, however it is very doubtful since it is late in the season and I'm providing mealworms; I'm really just hoping for healthy fledglings. I think my TRES will be fledging today or tomorrow. I have been seeing heads poking out and hearing a lot of wing-flapping.

Howdy! Many Bluebirders don't get to see the babies go for a few years. I am sure you will get to join the "I saw them fledge" club soon! Do you have a somewhat wooded area near? You say you thought they would go to your "tree" meaning you only have one? The parents will have guided them to the safest nearby spot with lots of tree cover. It must not be to far off since you have seen them on the fence. Keep the meal worms out and they will bring the babies down in a week or two.

Thanks Donna and Ken....i had made up my mind that i wasn't gonna budge from my swing this morning...i've been watching them for the past few days because i knew fledging time was getting very close...then when i saw the parents constantly flying to the nest then flying just a short distance away and singing their hearts out i knew it was time.....no no no...i wasnt going anywhere...lol...i can hear them up in the oak trees and sometimes can see them.....this is soooooo cool !!!....their house is all clean now but isnt it a bit late for another nesting?...i'll be watching closely...thanks again !!!

Congrats on becoming an "I saw them fledge club member"! There are many folks who have been Bluebirding for years and have never seen it. I am always so happy to see them get to the trees, but then so sad they are gone.

Hi Lisa......Thanks !!.....i didnt know it was so unusual to see them fledge but i dont work and i'm home most of the day....so i can be out there as much as i want to most of the time....my goodness....makes me feel special to have seen my very first baby blue fledge !!....but it is sad that i dont have them to watch anymore...i went out early this morning to see if i could see or hear them....no sighting but i could faintly hear them...i hope they bring the baby back to my yard soon !
