Hussy Momma, Part II? (Lond-winded)

There is weirdness with my third nesting and I can't quite put a finger on it. Here's the story:

Second nest of babies fledged for Mr. Blue and Momma three weeks ago Tuesday (6/24). As usual, the whole family completely disappeared. In about four days, Mr. Blue came back looking for handouts, but I didn't put worms out because I was going on vacation for about 8 days and wanted him to know from the get-go that he wouldn't have a source for these fledgies. I headed to Kansas on July 1. After much airline induced annoyance and ado I returned home a day later than planned (7/8). I recouped for two days before I wandered through my garden and noticed grass in the nestbox. "Oh, so they've started a third nest" I thought, opening the box to find that not only had they started, but there were already four eggs. And I saw Momma around. No Mr. Blue, but that wouldn't be unusual - he was probably still tending the fledgies (now just over two weeks old) and would certainly be bringing them by any day now for a reunion - especially since I started putting worms out again and Momma would be sure to tell them...

But that's not really what has happened. First of all, Momma (and I assume she's the same one, she's behaviorly just like the girl I've already watched raise two sets...) has only laid four eggs, not her "usual" clutch of five. Secondly, when "Mr. Blue" did appear, he was a completely different bird. He's skittish and doesn't talk to me. Either something very terrible has happened to him, or this isn't the same guy - My old Mr. would sit within feet of me on the patio and answer me back when I talked to him. This guy is terrified of my voice and flutters away if he merely sees me at the window.

Also - NO FLEDGLINGS!! Not so much as a "cheer-up" from the bushes since I got home. On my first Fledge, Dad brought the young'uns back about two weeks after they fledged and fed them enthusiastically from the mealie bowl for weeks on my patio, much to my delight.

So what do you more experienced folks think? This IS only my third nesting, so I'm still very much a newbie - and I'll admit, 2.5 nestings is hardly enough data to draw real conclusions about what is the "usual" course of events. I do find it a bit hard to believe that I would, at this late date in the season, have a completely new couple nesting - and Momma definitely knew how to use the mealie feeder, but Mr. was less sure (and the old Mr. would practically come to eat while I was still putting worms out...).

While it's lovely to have a third nest going, I feel like I did something very terrible by not feeding Mr. Blue and the fledglings for those first two weeks after they left the nest. I'm scared that all five babies are dead and my beloved, chatty Mr. Blue died of exhaustion trying in vain to feed them - possibly while his woman ran off with another man. Then again, this couple was so bonded and affectionate, I can't really imagine her finding a new guy unless something (GULP!) happened to the old one. So I'm happy, but distraught. Welcome to Bluebirding, huh?
