Tammy, I'd be interested in your buddleia and raspberry and wineberry starts if your buddleia isn't spoken for already and if I can tempt you with more trades.

Magic for white I'd suggest Phlox paniculata "David" (blooms all summer into fall), white bearded iris, orphanage plant (Kalimeris pinnatifida, grows to about 2' and blooms all summer). I can bring you a start of those. For purple Mexican bush sage is good; it blooms in late summer/ early fall and is usually perennial here. There are a lot of good sages that are blue/purple, MBS and Salvia "Purple Majesty" being the most purple. For orange Florida azalea, flame azalea, tithonia (annual). There are a lot of possibilities. It's the same color scheme I will be rebuilding around my own house this spring.

I wanted to add that if anyone is interested I can bring American snowbell cuttings and native jack-in-the-pulpit.

I've taken a page from that book. I've recently posted a rant about people contacting me, then getting ugly when I ask for their GW ID. That's if they'd mentioned GW. Otherwise I ask what site they found me on. Any response but this one perhaps gets a polite letter telling them I don't trade with people I'm not familiar with. If they don't want to provide me with an ID, then I don't want to share the babies that others have shared and entrusted to me. Lately it seems to be more and more the rarer seeds they're after. So, I've gotten to where I don't post those on my trade list. When I'm setting up a trade I scan the other person's list and see if their interests run towards some of the more rare or expensive that I have to share. If so, I offer them. I'm new, and I have a very (well, it was anyway :) ) empty yard. I responded promptly to SASBEs, I've made a presence on the boards both here and in the RR. I'm even hosting a RR this month (shameless plug for the MNF After Dark RR!) I took the time and trouble to put up a trade list. I take the time to split down VERY generous trades so that I have some to plant and some to share. To them it may seem like it's 'just seeds, so why should we care so much' but to me it's my favorite hobby, a way to make new friends, a labor of love to tend the plants and flowers, gather the seeds and repay the kindnesses shown to me. And I've met so many wonderful and generous friends here! I know for a fact the Angie will offer seeds simply for enjoying seeing someone's trade list after they make themselves known on the boards. I was one of the ones blessed by her :) And Michele is always sending me new goodies :) I want to thank you ladies and state again, that you're you're not being small, or petty, or anything else. You're generous hearted people who enjoy gardening and care about your gardens. I am very glad to have met you all. So don't feel badly if you just ignore those emails. If they can't take the time to become part of the community, then they probably can't take the time to plant, nurture and enjoy the babies you would share with them. Kathy

Well, here's my experience... I have had the Mackissic 12PT10 for about 7 or 8 years or so now... I primarily bought this model hoping to shred my crazy jungle full of palm fronds and giant bird of paradise here in So. Cal. First of all this hammermill chipper/shredder works awesome for any woody type material... it just eats em up without any problems at all.. The circular knife shredder/hopper portion of the unit works awesome for long branches also. As for wet stuff like palm fronds the hammermill can work fairly well, but you gotta have a system down, otherwise the thing will just get clogged up with a bunch of wet mush. Another problem with palm fronds is that they can wrap around the shaft and bind it up fairly easily... Don't put the fronds in the hopper, it will bind and cause problems. Steps to keep this thing from clogging or binding.. 1. the metal screen that comes with 1 to 2 inch holes is no good for palm fronds and wet materials.. I ended up cutting out the holes so that they were about 3 inches or so with my handy grinder. Bigger holes in the screen is better, but can't just remove screen because the fronds will just shoot out and not get shredded at all, so just use a screen with giant holes. Works waaaay better. 2. It's best not to throw full length palm fronds in the hammermill, it will slow it down.. Recommend cutting them first into 12 or 16 inch lengths first before shredding them.. Same with the giant bird of paradise leaves/stems. Note: recently I have been using an electric lawnmower to shredd my giant bird paradise leaves/stems... it will shredd em so dang fast.. just tilt the lawn mower up and open the side exhaust/bag connection shoot and feed the giant leaves (stems first). Whatever is left at the end can easily be thrown into the 12PT10.. 3. Also after a few years, the hammermills do get a bit dull. Just take a cheap 4" carbon fiber grinding disk and sharpen up the edges of each of those small steel hammers.. Doesn't take long. Just remove the screen and you can sharpen them up while they are still mounted on the machine. My yard has about 50 palm trees and 20 giant birds that I need to tend too myself along with tons of other tropicals, so this 12PT10 has come in real handy for creating my super mulch pile.. Beets putting out 12 or 15 cans each week overfull of fronds and cuttings.

brenda you got some of my pulmonaria! the reason i was digging amethyst out was because she was hogging my poopr pulmonaria's space. it's a nice plant- enjoy! looks like this thread is gonna max out before the swap. that's gotta be some sort of record!! vickie- i love most of the rex begonias, and some of the more unusual other cool foiliage ones(but not the angelwings so much). you're probably thiinking of the place where i said i was intersted in a hardy begonia that had long tublar, or sorta anyhow, coral red flowers. pdn has it, but i don''t know the botanic offhand. was hoping it speads like the other hardies and someone who bought it would be willing to share. no biggie if not- i'll probably eventually buy it. i don't think brenda had hardy fsuchias- i was looking for them. she's got gartenmeister which is z 9, i think- so a cool basement one here. lovely, though. i looked up sophie cecile and it says & has pix of rose pink blooms. not fond of pink, really. dana- on a plant dig/save today and there were maple leaved viburnums everywhere. so i got a few there- no worries about bringing one for me. thank you much. if you've already dug it, i can take it or you can pass it along to someone else. alicia, thanks for the seedling. i only need 1, though. gotta go get the dig stuff potted up. tam

woodsworm, would cuttings of beautyberry help you? I have two small beautyberry "Early Amethyst" that I planted last fall. (It may be exotic rather than native?) They're currently starting to leaf out. I have no idea how to propagate them, though. If you have propagation-from-cuttings instructions for them I'd be happy to help.

alicia, since you're twisting my arm, can i get some seed for s. roemeriana & ruellia "midnight"(dark purple foliage? flower? invasive? not finding much info on the web. :)

shari, that sounds fine. i got a couple penstemons from ralph last year, but other than husker's red none were evergreen, so i'm guessing i don't have grapes.

magick, when you say white sage, what sage do you mean? no harm in zone pushing- you never know til you try. when you say blue & white salvia i'm guessing you mean 'victoria', which is perennial about 1/2 the time here, even though it's labelled as an annual. if noone has it, garden centers sell 4 -6 packs of it cheap.

Tam - 'White sage' - Salvia apiana, also known as California White Sage. My "Gardens" keep morphing in my mind. I have a great (sunny, hot & sandy) place to push my zone - and I love the smell of white sage. Thanks for the heads up on the Salvia. Your Peony looks like it will be ready to bloom by the swap :)

Tammy Ruellia "Midnight" is something that I got in a GardenWeb seed exchange -- when I googled it I found a photo showing a dwarf ruellia with a dark purple flower. I can't tell you if it's invasive or not like the native one.

Rootdigger, how about trading for white digitalis?

ok alicia- sounds good to me. the one i have is med sized, not too runny (but is in a spot where it could only go so far), and a med purple, not dark.

thanks for the info on the white sage, magick. what does it smell like? i love the scent of clary sage, which to me is an herby grapefruit. and of course, who doesn't like pineapple sage scent? i'm excited about the peony. i have an area i want to put a bunch of them, and have been saving some up for a while. i just sprouted some seeds that had been in soil for a year stratifying of a single rose red color. i know it'll be a few years before they bloom, but i'm excited about a single. i bought 'scarlet o'hara' last yr- the prettiest single i've yet seen.

I should have enough Salvia babies for all 4 of you. This is my first year with them so I'll let you know if I have problems digging them.

OK, who's got the white salvia???? I would like some of that, anything on my list you need?

keithrnjd, I have some bloodroot that I got at the local arboretum at Tanglewood a couple of weeks ago. It had 5 bulblets. I could give you 2 if you like for some cardoon or hardy tapioca?

nancedar, I can dig you some carrot crest. this is a double and I think you will like it. I think it's gorgeous!

Vickie- I just went outside and the "Sweet Kate" you gave me last year has already filled out and is blooming. It is so bright and cheery. Do you have anymore of that? I have more spots I'd love to light up like Kate is doing to my other bed. Shannon

Shari- have you down for Helenium and cuttings of St John's for salvia trans. I translplanted some (Helenium)a few weeks ago and they were unhappy for a short time. They seem to need extra water at first (more than the normal transplant) but then settle in quite nicely. They should bloom this year. I wintersowed them last year. I would say that I would get these into the ground first. Some transplant are abled to be ignored but I don't think this is one of those. I think they will be fine but wanted to give you a heads up.

Vickie would love love love to have Solomon's Seal. Lately, I have seen several combos with SS. Sorry Kate didn't do it for you but she's a definitely adding something to my garden. Shannon

Woodsworm, ok, I'll see what I can do. I was reading that they will root in sand, so I'll try to set up a couple of cuttings that way. It sounds like it's a bit early to be taking the cuttings, but it's worth a shot! Any chance I could get a little of your kalanchoe? Thanks!

Vickie, I've got 'suncrest' and un-named orange asiatic lilies, japanese anemones 'Richard Ahrens', a tiny 'the Fairy' rose, 'Dilys' hardy geranium, pink lespedeza (I think it's 'gibraltar' or 'pink fountain' because I got it at PDN and it's never seeded around like some lespedezas), some daylilies, Hypericum calycinum, acanthus, mayapples, a tiny 'taube' hydrangea all potted up for the general swap. If you want any of those I will set it aside. My trade list is mostly up to date so if you see something on there I can try to dig it up. -Ais.

It has been a crazy week but I think I have most of my trades listed. I probably won't do any special trades after Wednesday just so I have time to make sure that everything is divided and boxed so if you wanna trade ...type now or wait for Saturday. If I have forgotten anyone or anything please don't hesitate to post. I don't trust the gardenweb email. Too many emails have been lost in cyberspace and I don't want anyone to be shortchanged. Magick, I am so sorry but I could not get the white sage for you. I checked from my computer at home and it was on our plant list at work but I checked at work and we do not carry it anymore. I asked the owner and he said that it just does not perform well here. When I had googled it I read much the same. It doesn't stand up to our heat or humidity. So sorry. Adele

Tammy I'm still interested in the Veilchenblau cuttings. I have the Ruellia and Salvia roemeriana seeds. If I don't find a Royal fern before Sat. and I do this summer I'll bring it to the fall swap.
