Is this a House Finch?

this bird showed up today - very pretty, but is it a danger to my BB's? it was acting interested in teh mealies too !!

this last one - he is sitting on the branch attached to my meal worm feeder!

Debbie, I cant see the pictures but House Finches have red on the male and the females have a speckled breast. They are of no danger to any of your other birds. You can go to whatbird.com and look them up to ID.

The only thing I can think of is to enclose it in chicken wire, I'm sure the finches could get through but not cats or squirrels or even Jays &Crows. I know not very pretty but you of all people could live with for a couple weeks! Wonder if Mom would accept it?

Interesting. I knew Brown headed cowbirds could not be raised by Goldfinches because they feed their young seeds, but I didn't know House Finches did also. I looked it up at Cornell's lab of ornithology, and they confirm what you have read. I guess that means you don't have to worry about the young House Finches. I've also read about retaliation from the Cowbirds, so I guess just leaving it there should protect the baby House Finches best.

House Finch/Barn Swallow standoff, sort of

Well these barn swallows have been re-furbishing this same nest on our porch year after year. There really is no other location on the porch or nearby that would be practical or safe for the swallows to nest. This southwestern corner is under the eaves above our steep staircase, high up and inaccessible to predators. I don't know for sure they are the *same* two swallows year after year, but there is only the one nest. Meanwhile Mrs Finch is sitting on the nest and occasionally perching on the edge to turn her eggs. I imagine Mr Finch takes over nest sitting duties, although I haven't witnessed the changing of the guards. I do see him sometimes land on the ledge and sometimes in the little crabapple tree nearby. It is totally strange to see the pair of barn swallows arriving at dusk to spend each night perched next to the nest. I wonder if one or both could be last year's barn swallow babies.

Debbie - Just in case you are like me and got the names mixed up at first, the "House" bird you should be worried about with Blues (and any cavity nester, for that matter) is the House Sparrow.

OH I know the HOSP - this is not one I know.
I was just wondering if it was the Finch, they are REALLY pretty.
Is there something special you feed these little finch?

My House Finches (and Goldfinches, too) clambor for niger/thistle seed and/or crushed sunflower kernels. Walmart sells a pre-mixed bag that the Finches in my yard are crazy about.

The finches also enjoy a nice birdbath. We offer them sunflower chips in the wintertime, which the bluebirds will also eat (but the bluebirds cannot open the shelled seeds).

Do you open the bag or just hang it out there?

Oh, yes, I open the bag - it's not one of those mesh pre-filled socks that they sell, but a separate 5 lb. bag that I use to fill up my feeders. My finch feeders are the long, plastic tube kind with several seed ports along the length of the tube. Usually there's a finch at each port munching away nearly all day long. And other than one enterprising young Grackle, no one else can figure out how to use them, so the little Finches actually have a shot.

I saw another tyoe today... bright yellow with black wings??

Sounds like a male American Goldfinch to me. Beautiful little birds.

Goldfinches LOVE niger/thistle seed. I use the upside down feeders or else housefinches and bigger birds will take the feeders over.
