1 day old orphans

Male BB died in nest 5 days before babys hatched. Female was looking after eggs by herself. Seemed to be doing OK. The day the eggs hatched I didn't see the female all day, so I went and checked the nest. There are 3 newly hatched babys and 1 egg in the nest. Still no female. It was getting late in the day, so I checked the nest again. The babys were getting cold and were not as active as earlier. I knew that these little ones were not long for this world and I was leaving for the evening. After some soul searching I decided there was only one way to solve the delema. I went to the box and removed the nest with 3 babys and 1 egg. They were all getting colder so I took the remaining egg, cracked it and out crawled another baby. Now there are 4 babys on there last legs. So I gathered them up and took them over to a nearby Robins nest with 3 eggs in it that were nice and warm and placed them in with the eggs. I checked the nest yesterday AM and the Robin had been sitting on them. During yesterday and today I have removed the robin eggs. Now there are 3 BB babys and the Robins are feeding and setting on the nest. I felt bad for the sacrifice of the Robin eggs but I think I made the right decision. I have struggled raising BB for the last 12 yr. The babys are going into day 3 and seem to be doing well.
