After pulling plants with Bacterial Wilt

Okay so I believe my tomato plants have bacterial wilt and that I will in all likelihood have to pull them very shortly. Based on that presumption I have two questions:

1. Can I diagnose this more scientifically rather than just reading about tomato disease and making a semi educated guess? I mean is there some kind of test to kind of prove this is what the issue it?

2. Presuming it is bacterial wilt, what do I about next year's crop? Can I plant something else in the space where the tomatoes are/were at the moment so I won't have unused real estate in the garden for this year?

Thank you.

Kate
