swallow problem

The first few years we had the farm, we only camped here. I never saw to many swallows but thought they were barn swallows. Since I started wtching birds I decided to look them up and see what they were -- they are cliff swallows. The past 2 years the population was increasing and now they have decided to 'nest' on the walls of our house! Any way to stop/deter this behaviour? DH has started a War of the Swallows to get them to move on. Every time I look at the walls now I can see the little daubs of mud. Any advice? Marg

A friend of mine had the same problem a few years ago and he got a high pressure water sprayer. It wasn't that costly. He said he used it a couple of weeks and the birds got the message and moved on. It works on bees trying to move in as well.

The problem is only for a few weeks then it goes away. If I knew how to post pics here I would show you what the babies look like when they first hatch (TREE SWALLOWS) and how beautifuly they fly when they leave the nest. They are a joy for us to have around, a couple weeks of mud and a little poop is well worth getting those new babies safley into the air. They are such beneficial birds. They will repay you for the rent many times over by eating millions of bugs.

Burning the pods is recommended? And the fumes wouldn't contain the toxicity....? BDSV must be different from poison ivy then. The Monarchs is what determined me to do my level best to eradicate all mine (& my close neighbor's). It took me 3 years with a LOT of handpulling, and luckily I never got as bad an adverse reaction as some on this thread. (Just a very mild rash once when I forgot gloves & holding my breath when pulling out the bigger, more mature plants with pods in the very first season.) They are MUCH reduced now, & I never get the pods, but the tiny thin filaments still try to poke up out of the ground underneath some of my other valued plants such as hostas & hydrangeas. Eternal vigilance is needed to fight these dreadful weeds!!

Well, The crushing of the pain pills and taking in water has caused ulcers in her mouth. So, we're actually back to taking whole tablets, but the struggle makes her gag. She's a 76 year old Cancer survivor. It's been 15 years now, but the radiation used to save her life has compromised her entire being. This year has been the worst. She is bedridden and is loosing the will to eat because of this swallowing problem.... I'm sad and feeling pretty helpless......

I had a long gone labrador who did suffer from laryngeal paralysis. Unfortunately, he was misdiagnosed for years (kennel cough). It seemed to come around with the antibiotic treatment so I let it go. When I finally pushed it after many bouts with "kennel cough", the x-rays showed the problem. He was 10 by then. We did have the surgery to correct it, unfortunately, he was not in that great of health to begin with and it is very serious surgery to recover from. My lab passed a few months post-surgery. My advice - your dog is young, get a correct diagnosis and have it taken care of while you have time on your side. Younger dogs bounce back much better than seniors. Best of luck to you.

I never questioned that you had encountered dysphagia in your nursing career or that you have worked with the elderly. However, dysphagia is rarely even a primary aspect of care for nurses in general, as opposed to the primary focus of SLPs in adult settings (vs. school SLPs). My intent was not to argue with you about this, but provide a different perspective. As I am an SLP that deals SOLEY with elderly folks (and Glass's DH is 85, if I remember correctly) with 90% of my caseload being people with dysphagia, I believe I am MORE than qualified to make my statements above. I'm sorry if you disagree with them - that's your opinion. I don't appreciate being talked down to or like I know nothing about it. Just because you've seen people with dysphagia and used Thick-It does NOT qualify you as an expert. Anjea

Thanks for the advice. Lisa, they are beautiful to watch. We have lots of tree and cliff swallows around here. We usually sit outside at night and watch them swoop and dive after bugs. Russ, we'll give the high pressure hose a try. Right now there are little daubs of mud all along the top row of bricks. Marg
