o.t. does anyone know how long parents will feed TRES?

5 TRES eggs, 3 fledged today and I can see at least 1 more baby peeking. The parents have been feeding it (them) all day and even the fledglings came to visit the box...it was so cute. anyway how long will the parents stay and feed the remaining baby(s)?? I did see a parent carry out a poop sack and it was rather small. I am guessing 2-3 more days before the baby will be able to leave the nest. I hope and pray they don't leave until all have fledged!

They won't leave until the all fledge. Then they should stick around for about a week or so. We have tons of TRES nesting around here and it is so fun to see them when they fledge. They are so darn cute! If I remember correctly between nine boxes we have 52 baby TRES right now!

I am finding that TRES are the best bird parents. They came back this morning and one more baby fledged, but decided he didn't like it and flew back in the box lol. He did come out again and is hanging around the box. There is one more baby in the box, parents came out with a small poop sack. They are all making sure that the last baby makes it. The family is hanging around the yard and taking care of the last baby!!! I am so glad. 5 tres all made it :) thanks for the reply Donna.

Rosey, my life has been long, complicated, and I've lost track of how many times I've moved, and some of the things I've done and learned along the way... I've had wealth, and I've lived in poverty... I helped raise 3 stepchildren, which I consider to be my own, with my 2nd husband... we now have 3 fabulous grandchildren... and though we've had a wonderful time together, we've had the worst of luck. We've been in two serious accidents, not counting the industrial accident that my husband had which took away his main livelihood. He's a college educated industrial engineer, by trade... but lost physical ability when he was hit by a huge factory truck bay door on the neck and back. It took him about a year to walk again. And then, I was diagnosed with lupus, and have permanent injuries from an auto accident. Oh, and did I mention, we lost everything in a house fire, somewhere in there? It's the short version... but along the way, my husband managed to breed and raise a specific type of American Bulldog, and is considered to be one of the most known names in the breed. Without his input, I can't write the book. He's the one with the oldest memories of how it all began, from a breed that no one knew, and had no genetic definition or registry worthy stud books... to a breed that is already slipping into genetic ruin at the hands of backyard breeders and mills out for a buck. When he's ready to begin talking, I'm ready to begin writing. Until then, I'm stuck with an outline. I do have some other ideas floating about... and I'm slowly working on them. Some days I feel creative, and others... I can barely function. I can't complain, though... it's been an interesting an exciting life with a lot of varying scenery, and I've met some cool people and made a close group of the best friends along the way. Knitting and crocheting is something I never learned, though believe it or not, my husband does all that. He cooks, sews, quilts, knits, and does a lot more. His grandmother taught him as a child. We live on a very small income right now, so I can't still keep collecting craft supplies, but I have enough to keep busy in the boxes I have collected so far. At the moment, we help caretake a farmette/estate owned by a good friend who is older and unable to manage alone. But our hope is to move north to be near family again. If I can get the husband to begin spilling this book, we could get there... possibly. It would depend upon the readership, of course. I say keep painting, Rosey! You never know what you might come up with! Have you thought of decoupage for those gift boxes? That might be a quicker option?

With the "privacy laws" lots has changed! And, lets not forget the ungrateful idiots that have wiped out their parents savings with POA's. That is what has caused so many changes. I am getting through all this and am very lucky my dad can still sign. Most of the money is in his name so I can get it out to pay mom's nursing home bills, but it has been a challenge! I now have it all worked out so should not have too many more hassles. Our investment guy told me today that I am not the only one complaining about the mountain of paperwork that needs to be done to take care of parents! LOL! Some thing our attorney adviced me to do also was to change the primary benificiary on my dad's IRA's. That way if, heaven forbid, some thing happens to him the remainder of the money will not go to the nursing home for my mom's care. Makes sense and that way I will have a few pennies to take care of my brother and his special wants. Oh, that is some thing else, we also have it set up in the will that when my parents are gone my brothers share will go in to a trust for him, therefore keeping it out of the hands of the nursing home.

Here’s one of my lobster open faced sandwiches. I usually devour before I think to photograph. I got too free with the mayo, but the lobster meat was moist. If it looks greenish, it is. I have won awards for picking the last edible (good edible) morsel of lobster from the creature. I added some of the tomalley. This salad mix also used the meat from the body. Knuckle, claw and tail meat is the best, but that day, I already had eaten most of the easy parts (day before). ETA — Some thoughts on cooking lobsters please, never cook lobsters with those claw (rubber) bands on. Horrid! And never ever by them already cooked by the grocery store. Rubber band flavored water. Blech. And you don’t “boil” them as much as steam-boil them. The lobsters 🦞 might like you to kill them prior to subjecting them to a boiling 2 qts of salted water. My sibling swears that the best lobster salad is from cooked lobsters that have remained in their shell overnight in a cold fridge. I’ve eaten more lobster than a poor Mainer in the 1780s. Lobster this, lobster that. Baked stuffed, Cantonese, ... the best most delicious lobster is “boiled” with the very best drawn butter. French butter, or country “sweet” butter is my recommendation. Inhale that hot broth from the removed claws — why let it go down the drain. Tear, don’t cut, the shelled lobster meat for lobster salad. The tomalley is yummy spread on good crackers. And, you know the trick of getting the large piece of leg meat out intact, right?

I'm 72 and have a really bad back (DDD at multiple vertebrae sites) that allows only very brief bending. Have broken both femur heads (below knees) in an inside fall, and although both are healed, it is painful to get on my knees for more than 5-10 minutes at a time, even using foam pads. Just this past year, I've decided mulch, fabric, newspaper and cardboard are all short term and I'm always right back to the messy, weedy beds that are even harder and more time-consuming to weed because of the items just listed. My decision this year is I'm done with ALL OF THE ABOVE methods for controlling weeds. I've ripped up the fabric from the one bed I had it in under a primrose jasmine that roots wherever it touches the ground (since dug up & removed). Last year I pulled up the newspaper & cardboard in one small bed. From here on out, I'm using the weedeater exclusively. I'm not a flower gardener and the few varieties I can keep alive are in pots off the ground so I can weedeat around the pots easily. I stick to flowering shrubs and trees instead. Unfortunately my father did NOT pass on his green thumb to me. Rose bushes and flowering shrubs are just easier to weedeat around. I just hold the whacker close to the ground and let it rip up what it will down to bare soil. I prefer the soil look to mulch or rock. I hand pull weeds that get closer to trunks if need be. I go through a lot of WW twine, and that adds up, but spending $$$ on twine is worth it to save me the resulting back & knee pain. Every spring my husband is always whining we need to mulch all the beds, but he just a 'spread it and forget it' kind of guy. It's me that ends up with the aftermath of his decisions. It has been a areal bone of contentions this year in particular. So I'm DONE WITH IT! Need to get out and weedeat it tomorrow, in fact, but it'll be done in an hour or less, as our yard (and beds) are small. :)

Karen, I am so glad! Mine are 11 days old today. I have not been able to get in there to see them, Mom has either been on the nest or in the hole or it has been cold and damp. I think today will be my first chance. I know all is well though, they are peeping LOUDLY at meal time!

Lisa, there is still the one baby in the box. Have not seen the parents much today. They have been coming back and one took a poop sack out, but I'm getting worried they are not feeding it enough. I see it peeking in the hole waiting to be fed :( Never had this happen, they usually all fledge at the same time. I kinda figured something would happen with 5 eggs...lot of mouths to feed.

I would think they would still be feeding it, they won't forget there is still one in there. They do sometimes withold food though to try to get them to fledge. Last year however I did find one fully feathered TRES baby in the nestbox when I went to clean out the boxes. I think it just couldn't get up and out the hole and the adults must have given up on it. The box did not have kerfs (built by some boy scouts) but it never caused a problem before, hole isn't more than 5 inches from the floor. I suppose I should have added some kind of ladder to the inside to prevent this from happening again but I never did.

Most of our boxes here have six nestlings each, only three with five, one has seven. Last checked that one on day 12 and they all looked fine, I am hoping all seven make it and fledge, they are on about day 15 today so later this week they should be fledging. I have one box on day 17 right now and they are majorly peeking. They are in Gilwood boxes so multiple babies can look out at the same time.

OOOOHHHH Karen, that kinda worries me too. I would start thinking about a rehabber just to be on the safe side. I think if there are two parents they should have no trouble keeping it fed and the weather is good for bugs. But remember I did watch 3 babies starve to death (one parent 6 babies and bad weather for days). I think I would check on that baby by late afternoon. Pleas let us know, I'm gonna worry about that baby all day. Remember I did bring that nest in and fed them wax worms and meal worms twice a day for 2 days when they were young (while it rained for 3 days). Gee that was Fathers day weekend and we had to go out to dinner with my Dad. I think if I had been home I would have intervened, it was dark by the time we got home.

WOW Donna, you have some busy TRES LOL usually I get 4 eggs, first time for 5. Just saw the parent come it went in the box. I was hoping she was gonna boot the baby out, but nothing doing :( The baby is still peeking and opens it's mouth for evey bird that flies by lol....I will check tomorrow Lisa to see if it is caught on something. I don't think so because it is almost out and then it goes back in. I think it's just chicken :(

I dot want to panic you. Please check this baby now, worst case it fear fledges...Better than starving. If I hadn't seen it myself I would not be so worried! Are the parents around?

Good thing you saw the parent go in the box, that is good. You could check on it, I guess it can't hurt at this point really as it should have fledged. I would maybe make sure a parent is around when you do so though.

The norm here for TRES is 5 or 6 eggs, normally 6, funny that you normally get 4, you would think they would be the same whereever they are.

the baby is still in the box and a parent is coming back to the box...even a baby is coming back to the box. It is pouring rain so when it stops, I will check the baby. I will leave the door open and hope it flies out.
