Red Squirrel ate 3 of my bluebird babies

I made the mistake of putting my bluebird house too close to the fence. Over 3 nights time something ate all 3 bluebird babies and left the remains in the nestbox. After contacting several of the bluebird experts they have concluded that it was either a red squirrel or a deer mouse. 5 eggs were laid, 3 eggs hatched and the babies made it to about 10 days old before the rodent ate them at night. That was my first clutch and first experience bluebirding.

Hopefully yall can learn from my mistake. Put up a great baffle and keep your bluebird house away from things that let squirrels or mice jump to the nestbox.

The good news is that the bluebirds are back at it and have laid 2 more eggs in the new and improved box. I moved the box away from the fence and improved the baffle (no gaps between the pole and the baffle). The bad news is that the nestbox is now in full Texas sun. I added heatshields and my fingers are crossed.
