Chaos with my bluebirds

We have a box that had 6 eggs; they hatched around May 1. The parents have been tirelessly feeding. Yesterday I returned to my house to find all kinds of squaking going on. A very small bluebird was right by my glass door. A squirrel was going for him and the male & female bluebirds were frantically swooping down on him. The male parent hit the glass door twice while swooping at the squirrel. In panic, I picked up the fledgling and ran up and put him back in the box. I have not seen the parent birds back at the box since then. I peeked in the box this morning & saw at least one baby. No feeding is going on at the box. Others may have successfully left the box. I have seen the parents getting worms and going up into the trees. I don't know if I should open the box and try to rescue the one in there (if in fact he is alive). I wish I had not intervened - I know that is not the best thing to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
