Thinking of next year already! Hostas!

I'm thinking of growing hostas in pots. I've not had too much luck growing them in the ground. Has anyone had success growing them in pots? If so, or if not, tell me your story!

I grow hostas in pots. I will include a link to a discussion about hostas where I describe how I grow them. I have about 300 growing in my shade garden. If you want them for next spring, I would go ahead and order them now. It takes 3 years for smaller hostas and up to 7 years for large hostas to reach maturity. I have had dismal luck trying to grow them in the ground, but I am pleased with the ones I have growing in pots. Good luck with your hostas.

I have had great success growing mine in the ground, but it does require a lot of water.

I buy the winter bulbs and never seem to get them in the ground - I'm always scrounging for pots to dunk them into so I won't lose them. We seem to go from "too hot to plant them" to "cold & wet & I don't want to be outside" so fast. This year I captured local photos of daffodil varieties so I'll know what to order come summer. Tried looking at my web suppliers but some of the sites take down their winter bulbs until it's ok to be placing orders again (not that I need to order them right now). Placed a trigger on my calendar to ping me about daffodils in summer - I'll go back and look at my own post to remember what I wanted. Posted the photos on my blog, linked below. I was sitting in a waiting area, waiting on my daughters class to be finished and I started to look at a calendar. I have 20 weeks until the first Farmers Market in the Spring, April 23rd. So I started to do the math and counted backwards. Lettuce and spinach, 3-4 week old transplants, grow for 3-4 weeks, that gives me 12 weeks, actually less. I am going to try to open up my online market April 1, So that would take another 8 weeks off of that, Gosh, I am in January. I need to order seeds and get organized. I want to try to put out tomatoes earlier than ever this year, run the risk of freezing them, around March 1st. That means starting them around the 15th of January. Wow, I need to get in gear and finish that new high tunnel and move the other one, clean up the garden, get rid of debris, continue to harvest each week. It is going to be busy! Jay

I didn't start any plants from seed this year, so I don't have much new in the way of tomatoes. For next year,I am thinking about some comparisons of small to medium-sized tomatoes in our hot climate. Moravsky Div sounds great to start off the year, but I'm not sure what I want to compare it to. I also want to try Bulgarian Triumph, partly just because I like the name. I thought I'd compare some Southern-style pink tomatoes. Maybe Traveler 76, Bradley, Burgundy Traveler and Pale Perfect Purple. I had fun with AAA Sweet Solano last year. Thought I'd compare it to Little Lucky next year (though their colors are not all that similar, and I don't expect that their textures will be, either). And then there are the first commercial offerings from the Dwarf Tomato Project. So interesting. I'll probably come up with a few other ideas as I read through this forum.

I have been, but primarily thinking about the vegetable and cutting gardens I want to put in at the new place. At this point it is nothing concrete, just in-my-head planning. I haven't really been thinking about perennial beds and shrubbery outside of where I will put the items I'll be taking with me (remember that gorgeous tree peony I posted about? Gotta get her in the ground somewhere over there...) and maybe starting some Disco Belle hibiscus seeds I have over the winter. There are narrow beds surrounding the house but they're full of lava rocks (UGH!) so all I'll do this fall is remove the rocks over the area I need to plant what I need to from the move and deal with the rest of it next year. But yea - definitely want a big veggie bed and an area for a cutting bed, will have to put some thought into the fencing, sq footage, etc. I'm a planner at heart, so I'll thoroughly enjoy the process over the winter when the snow is flying and I'm soaking in my nice hot bath poring over books and seed catalogs :0)

I just read the comments on the link. Also saw your hostas and read about your pine mulch method. I'm excited! I was lusting after several hostas offered at Plantdelights.com and now I think I'll order a couple!

I have been growing hosta's in pots for 4 years now. I have less trouble with snails and other pest. I don't do anything for them in the winter months, I don't even water them. Come spring time I water them well and give them a good dose of fert.

Now is a good time to buy hosta's cheap.

We had such a dry winter here last year that I did water a couple of times. The pots do help conserve water for me. I had some kind of caterpillar eating leaves this summer, and I have plenty of snails and slugs. I treat for them, but they are still around. I bet I have killed thousands in the past 4 years. New Hampshire Hostas has some pretty good prices right now.
