I think Mom is gone : ( BUT.....

This morning I heard the Male calling and calling. I wasn't feeling well so it took me about 2 hours before I was able to get some worms out there. I was pretty sure she would not be there, all his calling broke my heart. I watched after I managed to get some worms out, no Mom. However something wonderful is happening. All 5 fledglings are still here and they are feeding the new (11 day old) babies. I know Dad can do this himself but the extra help is even better. I pray Mom has somehow been held up somewhere and I pray she shows back up. There are really no cats in her hunting area but there are Hawks I have found no feathers. : (

I'm so sorry Lisa. I've lost many adult bluebirds, so I know exactly how you feel!

It makes you feel so sorry for the lone parent. I lost an entire pair and had to have the young sent to rehab ON FLEDGE DAY a couple months ago!

AT LEAST you have those earlier fledglings! They should be of great help at a time like this. I've never seen a later brood feed the latest one.

I also had the unfortunate luck of holding a beautiful male bluebird in my hand who I found lying in the grass dead on its feet at my other site. The losses have been heavy this year.

I sure HOPE she shows back up! There are Hawks, Feral Cats, Owls, Car accidents, etc. The list is ENDLESS. I wish I could find out what has happened to the many adults I've had disappear over these 6 seasons. Though I may never find out.

Lisa...I hope she shows up but wow on the earlier fledglings kicking in to help! That is awesome. I know two other people that have had that happen with but not when they lost one adult. Hope you are feeling better too!

Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. The memorial celebration went so well, a bright sunny day, people wrote condolence and memories on squares of vellum we provided, those who spoke each took a rose petal from the pink roses (Mom's favorites)and held it while they shared a rememberance, then placed it in a crystal bowl. I will make sachet's for my daughters from the petals. And we sent dozens of balloons sailing up toward the mountains with our love and wishes for Mom. My granddaughter made a collage of pictures of Mom from childhood, college, early wife and mothering, as well as recent pictures, and everyone enjoyed seeing them. All in all, a loving tribute. I am glad I made myself do it for her, when all I wanted to do was go to bed and pull the covers over my head. Little sister breezed into town for Thanksgiving...maybe after the NY trip this week, I will be able to sort out my very mixed emotions about that!

You have my sympathies for your loss. Thinking back to when my mother passed away, and I was already a grown adult with a child of my own, but as I recall, my father, although he was battling alzheimer's and wasn't always in tune to reality, I remember that he knew this was a blow for me, and I remember him coming over a couple of days after, and just getting me out of the house. He took me to a park and a couple of other places, and him just being there was a big lift to my spirits. Just being there with your kids is the single biggest thing you can do. I am sure you will find out, just through their body language, if they are comfortable about talking about mom, or recalling old memories. For me, it also seemed that getting out of the house and doing some types of activity of hobby really helped take my mind off my greif at the time, and I believe it would for my children as well, if I were in that situation with them.

It sure is a good thing they didn't chase off their last brood. I've heard of this happening before, but still find it amazing. Thank goodness Papa Blue has the extra help.
