What do you plan to try for the first time next year?

I'm still somewhat vague on mine. For the most part I want--

Another indeterminate cherry to go with black cherry. I'm leaning towards sungold or giving super sweet 100 a try again.

I will probably add Tumbling Tom Yellow to share a basket with tumbling tom red.

Another small cherry that can be grown in a basket that is sweeter than tumbling tom.

Also thinking about Brandy Boy and Silvery Fir Tree.

My space is limited or I'd try so much more :)

I think I am almost done plant and seed shopping for this season. Inevitably I will think of something else, but the bulk is finished. Since I am basically all shade it's more difficult... only due to the fact that my favorite and desired plants are all full sun. So that was a difficult transition. On the plus side, I have a balcony which I don't have to water every single day unlike everyone else in the complex, and my plants do very well with the protection from the 100+temps which go on for weeks. I've grown Fish Pepper before-- I loved it! i've also done black Krim and loved it as well. I really liked "Stump of the World" tomato a lot. When I was living in my house (before we moved here for school) I had seeds for 150 tomatoes and was running like 30 at a time each year to try them out. So much fun! Herbs are great. My railing sees about 3-4 hours of sunlight, so I have a combination of herbs and strawberries. I'm growing Mara des Bois and love them! Herb-wise I've got German thyme, dwarf sage, orange mint, KY Colonel spearmint, oregano, and a rosemary. I've got a dwarf munstead lavender, a pineapple mint, and a golden thyme on the windowsills in here-- picked them up in CA 2 weeks ago. I will plant a few basil seeds to get a plant this year as well once I put the others out. I also have some clumping onions. I wanted to do as much fragrant and edible stuff as possible. Most things I have are either one or the other. Some just bloom. I have a few foliage things. I was going for a nice sitting area/jungle/retreat.

laagarden - I have no experience with asters but balloon flower (platycodon grandiflorus) and coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' bloom the first year from seed. I grew both this year and last and both bloomed their first season. I start the seed indoors early. The balloon flower I harvested seed from my own mature plant. The coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' is a bright yellow double flowered variety I grew from seed I bought at a discount store. It produces flowers continuously right up into early November here in Z6. BTW, this will be my first year winter sowing too. Good luck!! For information on which perennials bloom the first year from seed, you could check out Dianes Flower Seeds' website. Not only is hers a Top 30 site on Dave's Garden, her plant descriptions say if the plant will bloom the first year. I ordered baptisia australis, digitalis, balloon flower, and meadow rue from her this year among others and had nearly 100% germination just growing them in starting mix in front of my south-facing window. (Note: Only the balloon flower of these bloomed this year.) She provides detailed planting instructions plus any stratification requirements. Whenever I've had a question, she's always answered in a timely manner.

Hello again username 5 :-) My sympathies to you for the quack grass. I am sure you have heard the old saying....about changing what you can change and accepting what you can't and the wisdom to know the difference? Well...I agree with you that accepting quack grass is the wisdow to know the difference...lol. I am not sure I don't have it in the lawn, but if I do, I don't think it is everywhere. The one area I think it is in is adjacent to this vegetable area and I am not growing grass there anymore but installing a walkway with flat stones and creeping thymes between it. I am going to mulch that heavily before I do though and maybe let it sit there a whole season before I try laying stone. And I am going to plant the thyme very closely to get it to fill in fast. I am hoping that I may have killed 90% of it this year, in that area, because it has had cardboard and bark mulch covering it for three months and it has only rained twice in two months. I had another area of the yard, that I wanted to put a mulched sitting area in and I left clear plastic covering it for 2 years before we mulched it and put a sitting area there. We barely saw a weed for about 4 years after that, and just started getting them back this year, so we cardboard and bark mulched again and so far haven't had to weed this season. That area didn't have the quack grass in it though. I wanted to use the plastic technique for the quack grass but didn't want to injure the neighbor's trees. So my soil is close to ideal..hmmm...that is good to know. If I just had full sun and about an acre more of land..lol. This land used to be farmland in the 1940s. So I don't have to add lime to the soil for the veggies, right? I seem to do ok with the veggies. Last year was the worst due to horrible weather all season. Rain, cloudy, no breezes, humidity, heat..everything bad and nothing good. I got diseases on my tomatoes that I never got before. Thankfully this year was better. Even the dryness was ok for the tomatoes and peppers with supplemental watering. We also took out a 120 ft of overgrown shrubs along the lot line in the spring which really opened up the yard to air circulation. We planted new shrubs, but it will be awhile before they are that overcrowded. [g] I have one veggie bed near my back door that is on the other side of the yard. It is raised with cement blocks and instead of soil, I piled half finished compost and shredded leaves in it. I put in a couple of kale plants last spring and when it got hot, I pulled them except one that I wanted to leave to go to seed. After I collected the seed, I just left it there when I got busy. I had parsley in the bed too that I wanted to try to winter over. I put more shredded leaves around them and I was so happy to see that the parsley came back this year and has gone to seed. Love when it does that. The beneficial insects love the parsley flowers and I love the seed. The Kale plant, started growing again in the spring so I just left it, it flowered and went to seed again and I got busy again..lol .... and didn't pull it. I was so surprised to see it start growing again after it went to seed, and right now I have a kale plant producing very nice dark green leaves and it is filling up about a 4x4ft area of that bed. No covering either. We juice greens all year, so I am glad to have that plant with no work for it, right next to the back door. What is YMMV? [g] Okay well...you are right, nothing is written in stone. I may try using the lasagna bed technique and I can always add something else in another year if "disappearing" soil becomes a problem. Yes, I am growing all annual crops. How did you find the excavator that brought you in a truckload of soil? Sandy loam sounds great! I am not going to plant up that whole 35x35ft area with veggies. I am going to fill 4 raised beds that are 4x4ft. and I want to construct a structure to house compost and grow squashes and pumpkins etc up the structure. I will have a lot of just mulched area between the beds. WOW! Those silver maple roots are amazing~ ! I am SO sorry for all the trouble they have been to you. If we ever move, I am going to remember that. We had a neighbor 3 yards over just cut down every tree in his backyard. Why oh Why couldn't the people in the next yard do that?! LOL Oh, well, we aren't going to be moving anytime soon, so you are right, just have to make my peace with them. I thought maybe every fall, I should take a shovel and just push it into the ground around the perimeter of the beds to sever any small roots that are trying to get a foothold. I already found out first hand how they will go for anything raised. I have had them fill up a compost pile that I left too long, and have had them in my veggie beds over the years. What can you do...is right! Not very many people have the "perfect" growing environment. Everybody has something. Thanks so much for talking this all over with me. I am much more certain about what I need to do next year, and I can get started getting ready for next year, this fall. I rarely come to this forum. Especially this summer as I barely had a veggie garden. Had some plastic totes from Lowe's with 3 tomato plants, and a pepper plant. Two zuchinni and two eggplants in a bed in the ground...which btw was near that area that I mulched and was FULL of quack grass all season and nothing grew well. I didn't get one eggplant. The container plants grew much better. Two zuchinni were TOO much..lol. Next year, I have been told one is enough. ;-) Oh, btw, how much lawn do you have that has the quack grass in it? Have you tried that corn product that is supposed to suppress weeds? Adam

bpgreen, thanks for helping me remember what RTF is. Steve said "...She'll eat some pie, but it's all about the crust for her.... I have to eat a whole pie myself!" Sounds like torture. I'd suggest you keep making 'em. Maybe one day she'll acquire a taste for it. I used to be a crust person myself. I discovered that I have 'superior' taste buds and now love the pie filling too. I just use much less spice. It was irritating to me to eat apple pie that tasted like cinnamon instead of apples. Many recipes call for too much spice, IMHO. I have a good no-sugar-added pie filling recipe.. I adjusted the spices to suit myself and, this year found a good low fat crust recipe. I'd never realized before having fruits fresh from my own trees, just how good they would be. The apples from my Fuji are different than those from a grocery store... more flavorful and even crisper. Don't rub in my lack of nectarines, Steve. :-( The thought of a juicy fresh nectarine or peach (or even frozen in a smoothie) sounds delicious! One year we got a box of nectarines fresh from a friends tree. Great fresh, needless to say, and the low sugar jam I made from them was fabulous! Parrots: Part of the reason I grow organically on my property..... I mostly have African parrots but also have a couple of Blue & Gold Macaws and a flight of 3 older cockatiels (2 well into their 20's). The "Psittacine" in my online name means 'of or pertaining to parrots'. I was a 'psittaculturist' (raised and studied them) for almost 30 years... retired from the "raising" part a few years ago. They definitely aren't for everyone because, if their needs are truly addressed, most are higher maintenance pets than a dog or cat. I've raised many species of parrots, or have studied them. I've also raised barn swallows, a killdeer, sage thrashers, humming bird, magpie, a starling (fun bird! much like a Magpie) and a common sparrow (Twiggy, one of my favorites)and maybe others I've forgotten. Have never been able to save a common robin, though. What species of conure was yours? Steve said: "Always wanted a falcon, though! Maybe someday..." Not an easy thing to get a raptor license. There is a guy that lives a few blocks from me who is a falconer and has a raptor rehabilitation license. His golden eagle died of West Nile Virus last year, (he now has a new one for his education program). They are beautiful animals. Crystal

I have read good reviews on Brandy Boy, especially posted by Hudson. I am also looking for a red beef steak variety with short DTM that is also a fair producer with tomatoee taste (juicy , tangy). I am growing Bush Steak for the first time. It is good producer mid season. But I have to see how the fruits taste.

Linda, I am growing most of those dwarfs, I think they are just starting, will report. I like their compact growth and good production size related. They are in pots but next year I might deliberately get a bed of compact plants or at least a section...
I have seeds hmm, probably for next two season to try all new LOL Plus Tatiana growing bunch of new Russian varieties, Krainyi Sever is one I am keeping an eye for, it is very pretty.
Overall I am very pleased with what I am growing now. My needs are going more large beefs and hearts since it is all goes into canning, fresh juicing etc.
Out of cherries Sugar Drop is excellent this year and very much like Sungold to me. Also Blush is fantastic in exotic look and excellent taste.
Will likely grow Orange Banana as it makes totally outstanding sauce addition.
I have seeds for Donskoi and am looking forward to growing it, reputed to be one of the best hearts. Also hopefully will get seeds for Joe's Pink oxheart. Also we will see what new goodies Lee Goodwin will be offering with his blue ones. I might try Ambrosia Red, brix factor of 9 can be hard to get.
J and L gardens are also offering Rostova, which is very attractive to try.

Going to try Brandy Boy because of all of the reviews. Going to try Ashleigh because the flavor actually surprised me, the best beefsteak i've had in a long time. An old friend of my father grows it and i finally remembered to ask him for seed. He also has some type of Purple/Pink Oxheart, i'll have to inquire about it's origin. It has dense flesh, few seeds, extra sweet. Looking to experiment and blend it into my sauces, dressings and salsa to alter the flavor a bit.

Joes Pink Oxheart is high on my list. Also I will need to get seeds for more of the dwarf project new releases. Other than that I have many hundreds of different type of seed and I am trying a few new ones each year. This year it was Kelloggs Breakfast - WOW no wonder its so popular.
Another great new discovery is Tarasenko 6. Productive, flavorful, juicy and abundant. I liked the Dwarf Wild Fred quite a bit also.

It's too early for me to say because all the new-to-me varieties that I grew this year are not ripe yet.

So far I have been blown away by the taste of Prudens Purple and Anna Russian. Little Lucky was good too. Bloody Butcher has not even put in an appearance yet. So much for that one being "early!"

I'm also growing Tarashenko6, Eva Purple Ball, Fish Lake Oxheart and a host of cherries.

Smithmal, bloody butcher is not a beefsteak. They are generally on tithe small side. But they are tasty and early.

Well, This season I have taken over my parents garden, so I have been trying a lot of new things. My next experiment will be a winter garden. It is not for next year but I am putting it here any way.

Also, next year I am hoping to plant lettuce with seeds from this growing season.

This year I found success planting the "Three Sisters" (Corn, Beans, and Squash grown together). Next time I think I will use a different part of my garden that I suspect will give me a better crop.

Hi there tomato growing friends! My list for 2015 is still in the works. I'm checking out what has already been posted. Some varieties I'm familiar with. Others I am not. I grow tomatoes from seed as a hobby. I wish I could do it year round but the weather/climate never cooperates. I try and select my varieties based on it's history. For example for 2015 I hope to germinate and grow the "Purple Calabash". Why? Well it happened to be Thomas Jefferson's favorite. He grew it on his farm in Monticello from 1806 to 1822. This past year I grew Livingston's Paragon which was the 1st tomato introduced to the public and commercial growers here in America back in 1870. It took him 20 years to perfect it. Ok it would be great if when you are adding your list for 2015 you could indicate why you chose a certain variety. It might be impossible to do it for all but even if you just picked out the one that interests you the most. I think by doing this it would add to the joy that this thread has created.

I haven't grown a heart tomato since 2011. I grew one
heart variety this year and it reminded me of how meaty
and wonderful they truly are. So next year I'm growing
mostly hearts. This is what I will be growing, subject to a
little tweaking here and there.

For me it more of a what I will be doing rather than what I will be planting.

First is I will start with using fungicide from the start.
Next is I am going to be more generous with spacing for a few varieties that have show to be space hogs.
After that I will have better, and bigger cages.

I am still on the fence about what I will be trying as far as new varieties. I am going to be looking into a couple of cherry varieties to substitute for Sweet 100. The plants grow just fine. They keep producing when others shut down. Taste good. Just my wife thinks the skins are too tough, and thick. Though that seems to help keep them from scalding in the hot sun here, as well as very few cracked even when it rained heavy. I may try out Gardner's Delight.

I am also thinking of adding a green house for the winter here. Though it will have to be something I can take down when the weather warms up, or it would turn into a sauna quickly. I doubt much would survive our 100 plus degree days in a green house.

I'm planning to do more early and mid season tomatoes next year. The late season heirlooms simply aren't being productive enough with the weather patterns we've seen the last couple of years.

I'm still narrowing down my list. But, thinking Siletz and Matina.

Also considering maybe some mid season tomatoes that are supposed to do well in cooler climates. Sunsets Red Horizon is one I'd like to try. While not really any earlier than the Cherokee Purple, Gypsy seems like it might be a bit more cold tolerant. So, I may mix in a few of those.

I sent an e-mail to TomatoFest asking them about their cool climate tomatoes and whether or not they are a good choice for western PA as you never really know whether it's going to be a cool summer, or an extremely hot one any more.

I'll probably be picking some off the list of those if I get a favorable report. No word back from them, yet.

Next year will be my first year trying heirlooms, I can't wait! I did buy a green zebra but I planted it a month after the others. I doubt I'll get anything off of it with the weather the way it is. I've bought some seeds for next year but there are a few, NAR being one, that I need and I may tweak it who knows
