bluebird emergency

We've had bluebirds nest successfully, usually twice a season, since 1974, with few mishaps. We have a camera in the box, and were horrified to waken one morning to five dead nestlings -- the entire first brood. We waited a bit, then cleaned out the box. We noted that the box was soaked...since this came at the end of an unprecedented rainy spell, we wondered about that.
The pair returned to the house and began another nest, with an egg on June 15, 16, and 17. On June 18, we awoke to just one egg! We believe it had been laid that morning, and that the 3 earlier eggs were taken in the night.
We already had a sparrow spooker, but considered the culprit might be a wren. We have a nest of 7 on our property. So we built a wren guard and added it yesterday. One or both bluebirds went into the nest box (accepting the wren guard) several times, but are not staying with the single egg.
Does this sound like a wren problem?
Do we remove the existing egg, and clean the box?
Remove the wren guard and watch the box?
Needless to say, we are upset, and would welcome any help.
