Bluebird

I saw this Bluebird in Virginia and wondered why some have a colored belly. Also, is this a mockingbird? I have also posted a couple favorite bird captures for this spring. I have had some other captures of birds I was glad to see, but the photos don't always turn out. Thanks.

Great. I had hoped it was something new for me. I was overdue for a lifer. What about the second photo? I know its not a very good photo, but maybe good enough.

The male will not incubate the eggs. Its best to get rid of the eggs and hopefully he will find another mate and use the same nesting spot.

We have fledglings - probably by the end of the week theyll be flying out and all of a sudden mom has disappeared. Dad of this pair has always been more visible and seems to take on a lot of the feeding role more than mom who seems to spend a lot of time hiding in a back tree in the yard. Do female bluebirds ever abandon fledglings and a mate or could she have fallen victim to something?

It's hard to say for sure. Was there any trauma to the chicks? Do you have house sparrows in the area? I would think that the snake would have eaten the chicks and left no trace. Dead babies with trauma may be most likely due to a house sparrow attack. Sialis.org is the best source of information for troubleshooting situations like this. I'm so sorry; this is the difficult and sad part of being a bluebird nest monitor!

Has anyone experienced a blocked bluebird house entrance?

This morning, I found that the hole of our most active box had been blocked with shredded cedar nesting(?) material. It could have been like that for up to 48 hrs before I found it, although that seems extreme given they were still alive. The babies (still very young) were lethargic but both parents were soon coming and going. Almost six hours later and babies still seem slow/not right, and I’m not sure if all are living. Parents are still actively involved. I’m at a loss. Do I leave them be or take them to the wildlife center? I hate to take them when the parents are still involved. No idea how or why the hole was blocked. Any info or advice appreciated.

Hi crunchpa,

Your first bird is an Indigo Bunting - congrats on the lifer.

Your second bird appears to be a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. They are rare sightings indeed for us, but here is a record shot we got 2 years ago:

A nice set here with good variety.

Congratulations on your lifers! I'll never forget the first Indigo Bunting I saw....that was a REAL blue bird! Just gorgeous. I only see them once a year (if that) in late April or early May for one week.

Don't see many Red-heads but have one hanging around for the last couple weeks....very welcome indeed!
