Where did the babies go?

A Carolina Wren built a nest in a box on my porch. Today I saw the four babies get out and hop around. The mother and father were there with them. They were all hopping and flying around on the porch but then went out of view in the bushes. I never saw them come back. For the past two weeks or so I would see the mother and/or father out there on the porch in the evening. Today, I didn't see them.

Did they all fly off to a bigger nest? Any chance of them coming back? There's one unhatched egg in the nest. Do you think the parents will reuse the nest for the next brood? They were so exciting to watch. I miss them already.

They did fly off..but not to another nest. They dont live in nests They have gone off to the trees. You are so lucky to have seen the babies leave the nest. I dont know much about your Wrens (we don't have them here), but someone here will be in to answer the nest question soon. Lucky You! :)

littleblu87 - If you listen, you can probably hear the parents calling the babies in the trees or dense cover. I have never had Carolina wrens use the same nest twice in a season, they build several. However, wrens are wrens, they do what they want so that does not guarantee that the will not re-use the nest!

Remove the single unhatched egg as it will not hatch at this point IMO.

I love the Carolina wrens - have a soft spot for them in a big way.

without knowing how many worm you received, how the translocation went, what the bin looks/smells like my guess is one of two things - they migrated out of the air holes and bolted or they are present but hiding. worms know how to hide very well. the presence of baby worms is a good sign. if your bin's in good shape, not too much food, moisture, odour your are best to leave them be for a bit worms are a lot like cactus this way

i had a c-section 11 weeks ago (to the day!) and i think i still have about 10 pounds to go to my prepreg weight. my stomach was awesome before! not bragging, but a had a tight tummy with a line down the middle! i still have a line, but it's the one from being pregnant! i had a low low down bikini cut, way below any bikini i would ever wear! i started doing sit-ups and yoga again a couple of weeks ago and i just hope in time my tummy will look good again! it doesn't look all that different anymore, just fatter. my advice, drink lots of water, eat healthy, and work out! that's all i think can be done ( : -jami

I am so glad I don't have this problem. But one of my DD's playmates is this way - not on purpose - she just has a different time clock than the rest of her family. They have early schedules - have to head to work at 4 am, so they need to go to bed early. But she simply can't sleep that early - even WORSE if she took a nap during the day. She usually goes to sleep at midnight. So to keep the sanity, they do something they would not do if it weren't for her obviously different body clock. They let her go watch TV in her room - usually Barney - while they go to sleep. She stays up til 12 then turns off the TV and goes to sleep. They have a family member on a later schedule take her to school in the a.m. They spent months trying everything, figuring she was just a procrastinator. And once they figured out she just has a different cycle, they tried to reset her clock to something more in line with a 9 pm bedtime to no avail. And now they are all happy. Other than bedtime, she actually does not watch a lot of TV.

You ARE lucky-and they'll often use the same nest right away. We had Carolina Wrens nesting under the cover of our scroll saw for years, until DuBois got ambitious and replaced the cover this winter, tying it down so tightly they went elsewhere to nest. I miss them terribly. The Robins also found another place to nest after raising two broods a year from a nest on the eaves of our deck. I feel abandoned

My father took the nest out of the box. He had stuff in the box and didn't know the nest was in there. I'm just glad there weren't any babies in it - he threw it on the ground.

What should I do with the nest? There's no where I can put it on the porch that is safe from my father. He can't keep his hands out of other people's stuff and there's no way to keep him out of anything. There's some brushwood to the side of the house that birds go in but the nest would get wet if I put it in there. Does anyone have a suggestion? Oh, and there's a little egg still in it. What should I do with that?
