Missing Mom - Single Dad and Questions

Our pair of blues had a clutch of 4 early in June. The nest was very strange. They left the bottom bare in one corner and piled the nesting material up along the side as high as the opening. She laid her eggs on the bottom and two days after they hatched the nest was abandoned.

We cleared that out and they rebuilt. She laid 5 eggs this time and last Sunday, sometime after the last egg hatched, Mrs. Blue disappeared. There was evidence on the ground near the nest of a disturbance - bluebird feathers and a partial wing, but no Mrs. Blue.

Mr. Blue has been diligently feeding the chicks and removing the fecal sacs, but one has died and is still in the box.

Questions:

Should we remove the dead chick or leave him to do it?

We have a worm feeder and give him about 20 or more worms in the late afternoon/evening. Should we amp that up to morning and night? He is very cautious when he goes to the feeder. He sits and calls to her so forlornly. Yesterday I could hear a bird answering him, but it was very far away. I don't know if it was his mate and she was injured and is staying away, or if it is another female.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
