Who is looking out my owl house?

I'm doing my annual birdhouse cleaning thing, [Tree Swallows haven't arrived yet] but when approaching a owl house I tap on the tree first

to see who is home before I climb the ladder.... I left him alone.

I have read that you can make a "box" out of the cheap fencing allowing the Martins to get in but that an Owl can not reach in. I had a Screech Owl reach in and Take a Woodpecker roosting in my Bluebird box :( Ya I know they gotta eat too.

Where is the washer located? What is below it? I mean.... is there a basement or crawl space below? If so, try putting a pole from the basement (or crawlspace) floor to the floor joists under the washer. What your washer is sitting on must be very solid. Floor joists that span 12 to 14 feet can have a lot of bounce in them. Once the floor joists are moving it exaggerates the vibration of the washer. It's not your flooring material choice in any way shape or form. Don't cut your flooring. Whoever told you that is an idiot. This is a STRUCTURAL issue. I don't mean structural FAULT... there's nothing wrong with your house except some architect that doesn't have a laundry area on regular flooring and didn't design the proper support into it. This is normal. You need to take the bounce out of the floor STRUCTURE, not the floor covering.

I replaced my windows last year and went without the grids. I love that they gave a cleaner, more updated look. I have a brick home with almond colored trim, and had to pay more for the almond windows. A house down the street from me had similar colors and put in white windows....screams to me that they are replacement windows. Another feature that I got was a 60/40 split, meaning that the sash is not centered in the window, but slightly offset. My front windows are 6 feet tall, and I think this is much more pleasing to the eye. I do think the lines of your home are contemporary, and that windows without grids would look great!

You are correct Konrad! How big is the hole on that box? OR is that the biggest flying squirrel I've ever seen? LOL Maybe it is just the angle of the photo.

I think it's a 2" hole for little guy's like Screech Owls, also Northern Flicker can use it.

Konrad, aren't they ADORABLE!!!! Ours come nightly to the hanging pb dough and suet feeders on the front porch... love to hear their high pitched SQUEEEEEEEKS!

In our owl box, we are lucky enough to have a pair of screeches. She is red and is obviously sitting on eggs at this point as she is RARELY seen. He (gray) on the other hand spends many hours sunning in the hole of the box... waiting for nightfall when he zooms about catching enough for both of them waiting for the day when the little ones will REALLY need 'zooming' from the parents. This is sooo cool to watch. Screeches are like little stuffed toys sitting in the hole of the box!!!!

So cute! Lucky you to see them in the day - I only get to see our southern flying squirrels at night when they are feasting at the feeders.

I have a screech owl box but haven't gotten it hung up yet - how high do they need to go? I'm thinking I might have to hire a tree climber to put it up!

Konrad-didn't you mention on the thread about bird houses that you have never had a screech owl in this box? If the entrance hole is 2", that might explain why. The plans I have which I built my screech owl box from, state the hole should be 3" in diameter. I had an owl in our box for 2 months and then he left. Last week I saw one in the box for one day and night.

That is so cool! Look at the claws on that thing. I'd hate to be cleaning that box and not know he was in there. OUCH!

Robin, thanks for this reminder, it's been two years since I build 4 of them and I forgot, they are for
Saw-whet Owl and Northern Flickers.
No owl so far, only the odd starling,.. been throwing out eggs.

Konrad-thank you for providing that link! I see the saw whet owl is very small. How interesting to see the pictures of banding the owls. Owls are so beautiful!
