Get these Bees out of my house, Please :(

I am a single mom with little money to deal with this. I could afford to kill them, but I don't want to. A bunch of honey bees moved into my concrete block house in Orlando FL app a year ago. They're costing me money because the Power co. won't go near my meter (and they guess high!). Anyway, I'm looking for a beekeeper who wants these bees. They're swarming right now (looks like a brown blanket draped over the side of my house) and I think that means enough bees for 2 hives. I found on the web that there's a way to lure them out to an actual hive with a wire cone trap, and after several weeks time, the bees and their honey will be moved out and ready to take away. Does anyone know a beekeeper in the Orlando area who might be interested? Thanks for any help you can provide. I really appreciate it!

This here is a very good forum too, but the one I just gave you is extremely active and I usually get lots of replies every day when I post. Even had someone come over and help me with a problem I was having with my hive.

I think you misread the part with the wire cone trap. Either that or the folks who sell them with the notion that the bees will leave and take the queen and the honey with them also sell snake oil that will cure headaches, ingrown toenails and high blood pressure. Please read the threads on Bees in Trees, Bees in the Wall, etc.

So far as they being a swarming, possible, but more likely they are warm and just moving some of the troops out to ventilate the hive. Finaly, assuming one were to get the workers out, and all the ones on the wall, that lucky person would have to find a queen for them and hope that it was accepted. Although your heart is in the right place, they may have to be destroyed. Before doing that, if you want to, call the Orange County Extension Service. (Listed as Cooperative and Extension Service, under USDA in the gov't pages.) They may have a beekeeper who will help you.

I'm rolling brown paper bags into Mason Bee Tubes. I haven't chosen a container, yet. But, I'm thinking a plastic ice cream tub with an extra brim to keep rain off. You can't disturb a nest once it has eggs in it. If you at all prevent a hawk from raising it's young, it's called a 'take'. The hawk may or may not abandon the nest and the young may or may not get the food they need to grow and if any of the disturbance is your doing, US Fish & Wildlife will be secretly filming you and trying to build a case. Many people get on a 'witch hunt' over hawks and 'their rights'. It's a small minded neighborhood thing because many view the hawks now as cool thanks to nest cams. My advice is to remove any tall trees that would be an ideal nesting site if budget allows, or make them unappealing before nesting season by paying a tree climber to add a fake racoon or fake owls that move, or other bright, big objects that move such as huge balloons with eyes, large shiny pinwheels with tape that flashes in the breeze. Add several so as to overwhelm the hawk as it first approaches it's old nesting area. It may not stop the hawk from coming to the area but may pursuade it to nest elsewhere. Just make sure that the type of hawk you're trying to encourage to move isn't considered endangered in your area. Your local game commission may have that information. A pic provided to them will be helpful. I know red shouldered hawks are becoming more scarce due to red tail hawks taking over good hunting and nesting grounds. Just check with your local authorities before taking any action.

Treating pet odors is what I do for a living and I see situations like this on a daily basis. I am going to asume your basement subflooring is concrete which is porous and will absorb urine and its odors. Bleach is the strongest household disinfectant you can use to kill germs and odors and it will do good as a initial clean-up on the surface which is the key word. After the bleach has dried the concrete still has wet urine and odor below the surface that is still off-gassing. The next step is get the concrete as dry as possible by using air movers and dehumidifiers together this equipment will also dry the walls if the cats have been spraying on them. Finally we use a industrial sealer that has a moisture barrier and a odor barrier once applied we guarantee you will never smell any pet urine odor from any area we treat. Kills is designed for smoke odors, as cat and dog urine acids will eventually weaken the product and the urine odor will be back. Enzymes are temporary fixes or are for minor problems per the manufacturers instruction the area has to stay wet for up to 3 weeks for best results and @$20-40 gal do the math bleach is better and stronger. Besides you have already cleaned the area now you have to get it sealed. Oh! and toss the carpet It would cost you more for a pet odor treatment then replacement. You never want to seal any carpenter bee gaps until the late fall. Leave them all open until then. Otherwise if you seal them in they'll burrow another one to get out, especially if you didn't spray them with something that has an immediate knock down effect. They first appear in April or May, whenever temps go above 70 degrees. This was a long and really cold Winter so I know I didn't see any until closer to June. They dig tunnels and lay 5-6 eggs in each one for the first few weeks. Then you'll see them occasionally throughout the rest of the summer in the early mornings or evenings when they are leaving early to get food and then bring it back at the end of the day to store in the tunnel for their larvae. Activity will tend to die down after a couple months when the original generation of adults dies off. Then in the fall the larvae will come out to feed one last time and then go back in the hole to hibernate through Winter. You want to leave the holes un-sealed until then because you are going to treat them with a dust insecticide such as 7dust from Home Depot. Puff it into each hole you can find and then just leave it alone. This is a way more important step than attacking one bee at a time. The adults will pick it up and carry it inside with them and then the larvae will touch it and die when they come out in the fall. Patch the holes in September or October when you know for sure that everything in there is dead. Next year get some traps and put those up, and have an exterminator put a 90 day residual strength repellent spray on all exposed exterior wood. Be prepared to still see a few of them burrow fresh holes, which you can then deal with using more of the dust. If you follow this routine they won't go away over night but activity should die down to little or nothing after 2-3 seasons. If you are around an area where there is a heavy population of them then putting up traps and have your exterior wood treated by an exterminator should be the routine every year as soon as temps go above 70 degrees.

I followed the advice of some people on this site, and I shot holes in the nest with my shotgun. This did not work. It just made my neighbours and the bees angry.

Eventually somebody called he police because of all the shooting. After explaining my situation to the police, they begn firing their hand guns at the nest, but it did not work. The bees just attacked us and covered us in bee stings.

I think the best way to get rid of bees is to use a baseball bat and smash the nest so that you can be sure that it is destroyed. You may get a few bites, but nobody will be annoyed by all the shooting, and the police wont have to be called.

only a moron would fire a shotgun or pistol into a hive...lol. might as well pull your jimmy out and pee on it. you can trap them out with the cone. place a hive near the cone with some open brood with eggs from another hive. when the exiting workers can not reenter the wall they will take up residence in the new hive. after enough bees are in the hive they will raise a new queen. if the eggs are too old by the time there is enough bees to do this, you will need top add another frame of open brood with eggs in it. a trap out can take as long as six to eight weeks to accomplish. then you still have the problem of the comb and honey in the wall which will attract other insects or possibly another swarm of bees in the future. if i was in orlando i'd help you out. if you haven't got rid of the bees yet, check out beesource.com in their swarm removal heading to find an experienced beekeeper near you. however, most people charge for this service. keeping the bees are not always an option. they could be aficanized honey bees and most people don't want these. also a trap out this late in the year will most likely not be able to build up a hive and enough honey to make it through the winter. so getting someone to take them away for free is doubtful.
