Anyone know anything about this hibiscus variety

It was not labeled. Am presuming it is tropical and subject to freezing since it is large flowered and yellow, but would be nice if it could be planted in the ground and left year round.

The dark eye and the familiar looking seeds pods makes me think it might possibly be a hardy one. But since I have a one I don't know what the tropical hibiscus seeds pods look like.

Does anyone recognize it?

The seed pods look like Rock rose seed pods.

Roselee, it could be Hibiscus calyphyllus or I call it Lemon mallow. If it is, I call it gopher food. I have replaced it 3 times now.
This is their seed pod, they look big in the pic but they are smaller than the usual hardy hibiscus

IF this is it, it dies back but returns here, if it doesn't get eaten

I've ordered from them and the quality ranged from average to below average. They are cheap and do offer a 1-year replacement guarantee if you mail back your dead plants. However, they don't let you choose rootstocks and they don't have nearly the variety of other choices (local nurseries don't offer these advantages, either). Fruit trees are too much work to go cheap on. If you want to maximize price to quality, spend a few bucks more and buy from Burnt Ridge Nursery (west coast). Spend a couple bucks more beyond that and you get a ton of choices (both varieties and rootstocks) from another very reputable nursery, Adams County (east coast). There are also other good choices out there (search the fruit and orchard forum).

hettar7 - I can give you some pointers on ordering beans from Purcell Mountain Farms. 1. Don't bother e-mailing them because they don't reply. 2. Be aware that several of the beans are sold under different names. I accidentally ordered two packages of the same bean. 3. My order processed fast. I ordered on Saturday afternoon and had shipment confirmation in my mailbox on Sunday. The box arrived shortly, with a corner broken and one of the packages punctured but if I lost some beans I don't think I lost many. 4. Many of the beans are a lot smaller than you think they're going to be and actually are beans from varieties that are most often eaten as green beans. Most of the beans I bought were about the size of those little black turtle beans like you can buy at the grocery store. I have planted a few of the beans inside under light because I needed to know whether they were pole or bush before deciding where to plant. The folks here gave me that information on some of the varieties, but there were about 8 beans that no one had information on, so I figured growing a trial one was the only way to know. The pebble beans are climbers for sure. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the white marble bean to germinate, but the others have germinated within a week. I think pink pearl and dapple gray are going to be bush, but won't know for sure for a little bit longer. Hope this helps! --Ilene

Donna, that's very nice of you but Geza's tomato list is in English, not Hungarian, There are a few Hungarian varieties listed but they don't need translation b'c they are known to lots of folks by their Hungarian names. Noire Charbonneuse, indet, RL, 8-12 oz brownish/green fruits with dark green shoulders. Tennesse Black, indet, RL, 6-12 oz purple/black fruits Frankenstein Black, indet, RL, 12-16 oz purple/brown fruits, some say tart. Brazilian Beauty, indet, RL, 3-5 oz brown/red fruits Chinese Purple, indet, RL, pink/black fruits, some say unusual taste, seeds from Andrey Baranovski in Belarus Couldn't find Zomou as spelled but there is a Zomok that's indet and RL and is a red stuffer ( hollow) from France. I think the Jaune one, as spelled, looks closest to Jaune d'Or which is indet, RL and 6-10 oz yellow fruits. Christy, there are well over 100 different so called black varieties known and not all of them are distinct varieties. There's been a fad as regards blacks and when there's demand the varieties will appear, often renamed. I know several folks who have grown out lots of blacks in one season and they are not all different. The same thing is happening with the green when ripes. Almost all the varieties on Geza's list are available from sources in the US, either from commercial seed sources here or to members of SSE. Below I'm linking to one of Geza's lists to show that he does spell the varieties in English, except for the few Kescemeti's which are Hungarian ones. The list below is not up to date but will give folks an idea of what the list looks like. Geza can't list seeds on the Seed Exchange Forum here b'c that's only for US folks but he does list in the UK Forum here and other places as well. I agree with Elmer. First I read an excellent book from the library (sorry that I no longer remember the title or author) written for laypeople, that explained nearly everything I needed to know to manage my money, in good clear language. Then I continued to read personal finance magazines, consumer's reports, and the educational offerings from online brokerages. I did make the mistake once (long ago) of agreeing to that "comprehensive financial analysis and recommendations" for a 1% of assets fee - and found that I was told nothing that I didn't already know, in fact they mostly regurgitated the information that I had given them in a pretty printed report, and then made some rather inappropriate, for me, investment suggestions (this was not one of the well known online brokerages recommended in my previous post.) I suspect that our situations have be a bit similar in terms of lifetime income, perhaps savings. If that is at all similar to mine, you absolutely do not need a "comprehensive financial plan" IMO. You need to sit down with pencil & paper, make a list of what you have, where it is, and how it will be available to you once you retire. Draft out your current budget and what you anticipate in the next year or two. Make sure you have your financial documents in order - will, durable POAs, house documents. Then go to one of those recommended, free websites and start using their tools to make your own plan. For example, I was always more comfortable with investing a larger share in stocks, and riding out the ups and downs - so after answering the questions in the website tool, it suggested a certain mix of stocks/stock funds and bonds/bond funds. Now I am retired and more interested in sheltering more of my savings from the swings, so that same tool suggests a more conservative mix. And I figured out that, once my DD was grown, I did not need life insurance. These are the sorts of things one of those comprehensive plans cover. Unless you are dealing with a need to shelter from high taxes, or have (or want to have) unusual and more risky types of investments, or have several million dollars to manage, IMO you don't need to shell out thousands for basic advice.

About how big of a bush did it make?

I am so glad to know it is root hardy.

Sorry the gophers got yours. Maybe you can get another start from this one, either from cuttings or seeds, and plant it in a wire basket as you mentioned doing for some of your plants on another post.

Roselee, I have one of these for the first time this year, and it has grown to about four feet. The seed pods are sort of fuzzy looking before they start to ripen. It has been a good "bloomer" for me.

my hardy hibiscus are some of my favorites now. Little care - lots of show!
Carrie - I still need to get you some of my "Kopper King". Would winter time be a good time to dig into and part the root ball/clump? I almost started some from those broken stems last spring, but the heat got them before they got established.

JD, I have never divided my hardy hibiscus ... always have so many for sharing that have come up from seeds. I would think perhaps early spring would be better, but I would like to know what some of the rest of you seasoned gardeners think about this.

the "Kopper King" must be some kind of hybrid - it doesn't make seed, but it is expanding from the root system. I moved it one winter from the front yard (pictured) to my backyard. No ill effect was noted, but I didn't try to divide it either.

Hi Carrie - I thought your yellow hibiscus had leaves that were lobed, like okra. Or are you talking about another one?

You know, Lin, think you are right. Mine does look exactly like the pic you posted. Guess I wasn't paying attention to the leaves of the one Roselee has as the blooms are certainly similar. So, Roselee, may want to wait for some more advice about how tall it gets before planting.
