Still have pine siskins...

I'm in Southern Ontario and we still have about 5 pine siskins feeding from the finch feeder. They drain it every 2 days! Are they sticking around? I would have thought they would have left by now. We've had weather into the 70s on quite a few days this past week.

They're still here in eastern KY, too, hogging the feeders, chasing off the regulars like they've done all winter. Seems maybe there's less of them, though

I live in northern michigan and have a lot of them still. They are draining 2 socks of thistle seed and a feeder of sunflower chips every 2 days. I love them but wish they didn't eat so much. I have a feeling they are staying for the summer. I thought they would leave with the common redpoles--guess I was wrong!

Awwww...they are so cute. Was it year before last when we had a Pine Siskin Irruption? Well anyway, I had never seen one prior to that, and we had scads and scads of them in my Georgia yard that year. Where are you located dklucius?~~Angie

I will be guessing here but with 1/2 peat it should be fine. To me the second pic looks like it has very little dust. So go with full peat if that is the case. For annuals in 511 these days I just eyeball it. You may want to sift the bark and get an idea of its composition. For long term plants I use 1/8 and 1/2 screen to separate bark into three 3 parts. The large stuff goes in the yard. Then I add 1-2 parts of the fine stuff to 5 parts of the middle fraction. I skip the peat often. This mix is has little less water holding capacity than classic 511 mix.

Is it normal for them to stay? This is the first winter I have had them.

I'm in the deep south and pine siskins showed up here this winter for the very first time. In all my years of bird feeding, I've never had them. WBU reports that everyone in the area is innundated with them. I was hoping they'd leave when the weather turned warm, but they are still here draining the feeders. Normally, I have dozens and dozens of goldfinches, but they are not around as much anymore. I guess the competition is too much for them. Wish I knew how to get rid of the siskins and still feed the finches.

I had a ton this winter for the first time in western mass... there were still 5-6 until yesterday and now we have one. I was wondering the same thing!
