New Nest

I found a completed nest in one of my boxes that looks to be a bluebird nest but haven't seen the bird. The nest was built in a day but four days later I have no eggs. Is it likely to have a delay like this between nesting and eggs. If mama never returns, should I leave the nest and expect another bird to use it? Since my titmouse and bluebirds have both fledged I now have three other boxes available for nesting so there is no urgency to clean this box.

Not to worry. As of this morning mama came back and I now have a beautiful blue egg.

Hi Cathy. I agree about the piece of wood. I just went out and removed it and will watch to see if it makes any difference to the blues. I may have to put a thin metal strip across the front to keep the door from closing too much. I must admit I hadn't thought of a better escape route for the BBs. I was hoping to get a shot of two or more of them peeking out on fledge day. With the round hole it's hard to see more than one at a time, although, if I recall, Kenn has shots that do. Hi Harold. just bought a cool new bluebird nesting box

No but I'm going to be testing two of them this spring.... it has a hole similar to a Gilwood style, but a flared body (smaller at base) and is roomier inside. Let us know what you get in it please! Bet from CT

House sparrows and bluebirds are mortal enemies; sparrows will build their nests right on top of the bluebird nestlings and kill them in this way. Watch for Dad bluebird trying to defend the nest. There should not be 2 nests in one box! Read an article on this; will try to find the link and post for you.

Yes I agree, mine will fledge with out me I think and I hate that since it will be my first experience with them, But until then I can give what I can :)
