HOWR don't follow the rules

I have a box dedicated to HOWR in order to help keep them away from my other nests. This one is mounted on a tree in "book" perfect wren territory. Supposedly they don't like open spaces. I have up a Purple Martin house that is set up in as open an area as possible. Wrens should not be interested in this location, but that is where they have chosen. Why would they want a house far away from trees and bushes (where all the twigs are)? Plus the room sizes in these units are way too big for them. But they laboriously stuff compartments with sticks and spider casings every day, and every day I have to lower the house to remove them. It must be a ton of work for them to carry sticks so far that I cannot understand why they would chose this house.
