You had ones that had three eggs and then quit laying during that nasty cold spell we had right? Have they started laying again yet? Did yours push the eggs into the nest and put more nesting material on top??

We had two pairs that had 3 eggs each and then stopped. The one at the park pushed the eggs into the nest, put more nesting material on top and just today we have a new egg. The ones in my yard kept the 3 eggs in the nest and she is in there daily however I have no clue if she is incubating them or not as she is normally sitting with her head sticking out of the box. No new eggs yet, I have no clue what they are doing!!

Donna, she had 2 before the horrid weather. She had pushed them down to the bottom and added feathers. (the ducks are back). Thursday I witnessed what looked to be a rape in her box. As I saw it she was not open to the bird sex. The next day he brought her a feather before he came in the box and did it again! LOL. Nest box cams can ofer too much info! LOL. Sitting with her head stickig out is exactly why I dont do Wren guards with these guys. I do with all other nesters. give her a few more days, I am sure you will see new egs.

It is odd that your Blues are not yet building. I'm north of you and my Bluebirds eggs are due to hatch on Tuesday. My TRES have arrived, but they generally don't even think about nesting until early May. I feel for you with all that rain you've been having. We had a few springs like that, and they are so awful. It is a curiosity why the TRES so outnumber the EABL. The TRES seem to have a much harder life with their long migration. And they have very similar nesting requirements and predators. It makes you wonder why there aren't more EABL. Hang in there. I'm sure your Blues will nest there eventually.

I just read that an opening 7/8"th tall and 2" wide will allow the TRES access but not the HOSPs. I am modifying a box today to try , my TRES have not started a nest yet and I have a pesky HOSP that I have not gotten yet so I will try this box until I get him! Can you modify the entrance of the gourd? I heard this type of entrance was first used for the Martins. I will send the link if I can find it. Im so sorry to hear this....it has been a TERRIBLE year for the TRES. If you look through the last few pages here you will see that many were lost. I lost 3 babies, the I am SO sad thread. Just one of many posts reporting lost TRES. The National Wildlife magazine april/may edition has an article titled Empty Skies Insect-eating birds that feed on the wing are vanishing from parts of North America and scientists dont know why. In my case I know it had to do with losing 1 of the parents leaving just one to feed 6 babies in horrid weather. I think most of the sad reports on here are weather related. I have not seen any attempt at a second nesting here but it has only been six days and 3 babies did fledge. There is one report of a second nesting on the forum so far this year. Mine are just like your first picture today. Still peeking out when i came in, How long do they do that before they go? I thought they'd be gone today, but there is still at least one in there, I had 5 (I think)I wish I had seen at least one go, but I didn't, and probablyby the time I get home tomorrow nite from work, they'll be gone. Do I take the nest out, same as Bluebirds?
