Oh my! oh my! I have a pair of Blues house hunting!!!!

I was going to take a walk and walked out of our garage and heard that familiar song. Grabbed the binocs and found him sitting on a wire out front. Then he flew down to a chickadee house that had the hole enlarged due to a woodpecker, I saw a TRES go in it once but I am not sure a Blue could get in there or not. Then he flew out back to the other chickadee house that has the hole reducer on it and mom Blue was with him. I ran out and took the reducer off just to keep them interested in our yard. Figured if they stayed by this box I would have dh put a new box up near it tonight as this is the one the wren is interested in. We only have one actual Bluebird house left that is empty as we have seven pairs of TRES nesting in the others. They did finally find the empty Bluebird box and checked it out big time. Mom went in and stayed in for a long time while dad hung on the outside. They have also been checking out the TRES nestboxes too but for the most part they are getting chased away from them. I need some please nest here Blues vibes!!! Oooh I just went and looked quick and they are back on the one empty nestbox. It is a NABS style box and it is paired with a TRES Gilwood box, they are 19ft apart. There was a HOSP pair which had just started a nest in there but I disposed of the male this morning and the female left, Whew!!

After I saw this pair of Blues I got worried about my two pairs at the park as I am thinking these maybe had a failed nesting. I went and checked and both are safe and sound. We should have some eggs hatching this weekend on one of the pairs down there, and next week with the other pair.

I am so excited, I hope they stay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Lisa!! First thing I did this morning when I got up was to go to the window to see if they were at the box and they were! They were there for about an hour and a half when I had to take dd to school. They weren't there when I got back but showed back up again around 9:30, now I haven't seen them since. They had both been going in the box, once I saw them both go in the box together too which I figured was a good sign. I am not freaking out yet that they went somewhere else, well yes I am but I am not admitting it. LOL! I recall last year when we got a pair of Blues in mid June that they took forever to get settled. Last year I saw them on a Monday and then the female was MIA for the next five days however the male stayed around singing his heart out. Then the female showed back up and two days later started building a nest. So I am hoping they have chosen this box and right now are just relaxing a bit until they are ready to get down to business again.

Well, I think we've all done that one! Some helpful planning hints. Take your pot of plant.Set it where you want it. Now pace the area where it will eventually be... Uh, boy. Then you can decide if it will fit, or if it goes back... Also some planning hints, the tags have the average size for a zone 5/6 growth size. We all know EVERYTHING gets bigger in Texas (and in Georgia) if it likes heat and humidity...if it doesn't you can plan for it to shrink (and eventually disappear)... if your own garden is an "ideal" climate for the items you purchase, expect that it could get a bit bigger. You purchased a landscape tree, which is commonly the only tree in the middle of a grass yard. That is something to consider. I bought some red buds. They work as a landscape tree of course, but they also work fairly well in a garden setting. Don't get too large, don't get too much canopy. Can send out volunteers! (and probably will) plus now they come in a variety of sizes...even a dwarf. So there is something to think about. In general when I am planning I do the research first. I love my google!! Small garden trees, trees for small yards, small canopy trees, narrow trees, fatigate trees etc. all these would give you a tree with a small canopy for a garden. Then you can look up the selections they offer on various different websites to see what they say (because no two say the same thing, lol). Then I make a list of possibilities for size, bloom time, color, fall color, if they will re-seed too much, are "dirty" and drop fruit when I don't want them too, feed birds etc. etc....and take that list of desired plants to the nursery and get one they have. I always hope they'll have more than one choice, but often not. Then again, there are always those impulse purchases....

I probably didn't explain well, the roses were from my father's block and had to be also transported by car to my place...just a 5 min drive. I have close to 200 as well. I don't mind the pruning, just do it over several weeks. But moving old, neglected roses is not much fun!! Last time I shifted one of this size and age was an old Lorraine Lee shrub also 7ft tall. The successful move of this one gave me confidence to tackle these, they don't mind a good hacking!!!! ;) Yes, Briss I breathe a sigh of relief it's over, thank goodness I had help!! Hey Next Obs, I think I've identified your sans. It was the first name I thought of when I first saw your pics, but I dismissed the ID since 31 inches is much taller than it normally grows. But revisiting the pics of your plant and your descriptions, I'm sure it is S. trifasciata 'Gray Lady'. Juan Chahinian says in his book that this variety tops out at 18 inches, but I've grown it a bit higher than two feet. So I think a good wholesaler could get 'Gray Lady' to 31 inches with forced feeding and perfect culture and temps. Google that name and see what you think. In Europe, this variety is called 'Silver Princess'. Interestingly, 'Gray Lady' propagates true from leaf cuttings where many trifasciata's revert to the base species. 'Gray Lady' isn't rare but is very uncommon, so you've made a good score my friend. Russ

Donna I am so hoping they stay for you. For me it started with one pair in this yard and has blossomed out. I have a small trail up the road too and although I'm always just glad they have somewhere safe to nest it is not as nice as seeing them in my own yard everyday all day.

Thanks everyone!I hadn't seen them since 9:30AM yesterday and when I got up this morning they weren't there either. I was thinking maybe they found another nestbox yesterday. Next time I looked this morning there was the male sitting on the box. He was around for awhile but I didn't see the female. Now I haven't seen him for awhile either however seeing what I observed of the pair I had last year well into the season I am thinking it just takes them a bit to go from having an active nest that fails to starting a new one. I would expect though if they are staying that they would start a new nest by early next week. So I am still hopeful. Sad to think they showed up here cause they may have had a failed nesting elsewhere. I sure wish I had the same pair return year after year like some of you do. I really think one of the pairs down at the park is the same pair from last year nesting in the same box.
