Bob, I ordered the following cannas on-line from Paradise Garden: Red King Humbert, Wyoming, Pretoria, Pink President, and City of Portland. For some reason, they didn't look exactly like the pictures to me, but perhaps because I'm a novice with these plants. Actually, I fell in love with the plant first, then quite by accident, and much to my suprise I noticed that I was getting hummers. Yes, the humming birds had no interest in the lovely large flowering ones, but stuck to the smaller long-throated flowers. (Note I said 'lovely' as apposed to gaudy-just MHO) Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough last year to label what I pulled up, so I'm going to have to just plant them and see what comes up. I've posted the link below if you're interested, but I'm afraid to order more due to the large number of tubers you wind up with from just one at the end of the season. Yea, sighted my first hummer this afternoon,about 5 sips. Last year was March 26th. I moved in October, so I was anxious to see if any hummers would show up here. I have a blooming fucshia and salvia. I have two window feeders, so I am excited to watch my hummer feed up close! Nana

I live on a fairly busy thoroughfare that also represents one of the borders between the city and the neighboring suburbs and often used by ambulances, etc., because it is wide and straight. However my little one found my garden oasis up here on my 18th floor balcony last August while on her way back down south, where she nectared on a reblooming "Red Prince" weigela and a blooming goldflame honeysuckle that I have here. She ultimately returned here on June 5 this year and was greeted with a brand new feeder and quite a smorasbord of flowering plants! She had been coming about every 20 - 40 minutes like a clock, all day, every day since then, until the past week or so where her appearances have been a bit more sporadic. I'm thinking she might be raising young somewhere, although I have seen the yellow jackets out bothering her when she does come. Last year she left sometime mid-August so I'm hoping she'll at least stick around until then before heading back.

Sharon, The only place I've ever found seeds is from Wildseed Farms in Texas. Maybe they are the exclusive distributor. I'll link them below. I planted them (from seeds started inside in flats) 5 or 6 years ago and they've reseeded themselves ever since. I left some plants in the ground and they survived until we went down to 3 degees and then they finally froze. That was in either Jan. or early Feb. and they had bloomed in the ground until late Dec. or early Jan. They are both heat-tolerant and cold-hardy which is a great combination since regular petunias play out so early in the heat here. The plants in bloom now overwintered in large pots in the garage. The tiny seedlings are just now starting to pop up out of the ground and most of them are about the size of a BB, but they'll be blooming by Memorial Day if not sooner. I can pot up some of the tiny seedlings and bring them to the Spring Fling if you want me to. (They won't be tiny by then...they'll be a nice size just about ready to bloom.) Chandra, I didn't know mason bees were leaf-cutter bees. See, you learn something new every day. Post a message asking George where he gets his bees.
