Heartbroken! And Ticked Off!!

That nasty wren has struck again. Last time it destroyed a nest from which babies had just fledged and cracked and threw out 2 non-viable eggs. THIS time it has destroyed 5 beautiful eggs that were a week away from hatching! I am so mad I can hardly control my anger, and I have nothing to take it out on. I would have thought the blues would have defended their nest. The male is around almost all the time and the female leaves the nest very little. I feed them very generously three times a day so they won't feel the need to leave. I've kept an eye on it and chased the wren away once last week, but as you know, you can't watch it 24 hours a day. It had to have happened within the past hour. I'm taking the birdhouse down and I'm through. Can't take this. It hurts too much to see the female sitting on a tree branch looking around wondering what happened. I just hope she knows that I didn't do it!

I know how you feel. I was ready to take down my houses along with every birdfeeder I have when the sparrows killed my baby blues and their mommy.
I got mad and got even. We now have a nest waiting for momma bluebird to lay eggs. Our tree swallows have 3 eggs in their nest now.
The sparrow trap we bought has worked wonders in the short time we have had it. Hardly a sparrow to be seen!

I will get yelled at...but do you have bird police in your area that would come looking for a missing Wren? Nough said.

Uh oh - you didnt really get out of bed to chase him down did you? Bad move. Nothing more fun to a bored cat than a game of Chase Me. Cats who live together play that game all the time - one pokes at the other to get him to chase. Now he's going to keep at it, and if you try to ignore him he'll try 10 times harder to get your attention because you gave in to him that one time. You've already said the squirt bottle doesn't affect him, so ditch that idea. Your cat reminds me of my cat Figgy - you just need to play him hard in the evening - and in the morning. Clear space in your house so he has room to run. Find out whether he's a cat who specializes in stalking/chasing things on the ground or likes to catch flying things in the air, or both. Ping pong balls, super balls, crumpled up tin foil, feather toys on a string, etc. - whatever it takes. 4 or 5 a.m. is an active hour for cats because in nature that's when they'd be hunting, sun up and sun down. The food thing may indeed be part of it - if he's hungry that would explain why he's working so hard at it. With Figgy, who tends to binge eat and get too overweight if I leave food out, I had to remove carbs esp. grains from his diet because that did make him noticeably more aggressive and obnoxious to me and to my other cat Orange. Corn and other carbs can be as addictive a food for cats as tortilla corn chips are to some of us humans (myself included). Is he losing weight? I think you can feed him a little bit more canned without worrying too much about weight gain, as long as it doesnt have carbs in it. Or, feed him strips of chicken you keep in the fridge. My cats get a combination of Into the Wild dry food (no grains) and canned and they are doing nicely. Figgy still loves his food and still a bit on the chunky side but not obese.

Emma, when he first got his catheter out, he couldn't feel his bladder to know that it was full. He's been doing kevlar (sp) exercises and his bladder is working. He only needs to get up once late in the nite (around 4:30-5am) to go to the bathroom. I've encouraged him to not wear the Depends when he's around the house and not going anywhere, but he's reluctant, but I'll work on him some more :)

This ticked me off this past week. I had an appointment with the vein doctor to check my fistula. The tech did the exam and while I was being examined another man came into the room. Did not say who he was or why he was there and they started talking about a blockage and an aynurism. I said are you seeing this in my vein and they both said no we are talking about the patient before you. Well they had me scared to death. Then a nurse also came into the room and gave him a piece of paper and said you can tell me later. What??? Don't come in the room for this when he has a patient. So when it was just me and the tech I said who was that man and he says its a doctor. Then I was put in a room after the tech was finished to wait for a doctor to tell me the results over 30 minutes later she came in and spent maybe 3 minutes with me. Your fine we will see you in 3 months. At the desk on check out I hear my name and the words we have no vitals on Mrs. Mary. So a nurse says I will do it and she told me to sit in the lobby. My blood pressure was high but my temp was normal. I will be talking to the doctor about this. when we got home my husband said they didn't ask for a payment. Well maybe it was free day. I'm sure I will get a bill in the mail. Mary

I guess pecking at all my windows has been handed down to the female cardinals, generation after generation. I have about 3 fake owls at different windows, but it looks like I need at least 3 more. We don't have a garage and I park right next to the house. We have a climbing hydrangea that covers our stone chimney right next to the driveway. Well, a robin decided she wouldn't need to go far to her nest in the hydrangea, and perches on my car's side mirror and poops all over my car door........and I mean ALL over. I can't believe how often she poops. I tried to scare her off by remotely setting off my car alarm, but it didn't work and I had to start keeping my car parked kinda far from the house. But now there's a young female cardinal that's always at the car mirror now. One year, I had a really bad problem with the car and the cardinal and I tried putting bags over the mirrors, but they blew away. Then I put a fake owl on the top of the car, but that got to be too much work....up and down, up and down. These guys are just being plain silly.

Lisa, No Bird Police ... if I could manage to catch the wren, it would be history. Two of my granddaughters first saw the destroyed eggs on the ground and came running inside all upset. The 10 yr. old said she would give me her air rifle to kill the wren. But I told her I'd end up shooting out the windows of my back door neighbors. I'd never be able to zero in on the bird. Then she said why don't you put a mouse trap in the bird house - and I told her that the blues would get trapped also,. She tried and tried to come up with a solution.

Lady Jemima, Our subdivision is fairly new, and we've only been in this house a little over 4 years. We have a dozen or so varieties of birds that have found us, but only now has a wren showed up. I don't have a wren guard, but I went to the sialis site and have seen them. When I get over my heartache, I may get my husband to make one by the plans on the sialis site

blumz...so sorry this has happened...a wren guard "may" have saved the nest. Check them out on Sialis.org.

I am in total agreement as to what lisa said...do you have a vanert inbox trap and an extra nestbox....that is what I use for HOSP alot but let me tell you...a vanert will trap any type of bird in the box...I have trapped HOSP, TRES, Blues, Downey Woodpeckers and even a chipmunk once with the vanerts and yes it will even trap a wren. A hole reducer on the box will prevent a larger bird from entering too.

Good luck and don't give up! There may be heartbreak at times but other times it is so worth it!!

None of the other birds in our area have ever bothered the blues. They seem to dwell in harmony. The wrens are totally new on the scene, and I've only seen this one. But I know if there in a male/female couple I'm probably going to be dealing with them from now on. I looked at the vanerts, but am not sure I'd be able to deal with the bird once I trapped it. Since the wrens are smaller than the blues, the hole reducer probably would not be my best choice. We don't have the HOSP or the TRES for some reason. Chipmunks can't get in due to the great WBU pole and baffle. Even at my other place which we left a little over 4 years ago we didn't have the HOSP nor TRES. Only thing I had to deal with there were hawks and cats, which are much easier to handle. I'll check in to the wren guards and see if I can try again. I do have an extra box.

Chipmunks can't get into my normal nestboxes as they are baffled, I was talking about my trap box, it is mounted on a fence post so I can easily move it to wherever I want it, that is what a chipmunk got into. When I talked about the reducer I only meant if you want to set a vanert and don't want a bluebird trapped. Not that I trap wrens...just saying...

Gotcha, Donna. I am going to keep this in mind. I have read about the the vanerts, and the other deterrents before, but not had serious problems until this year. Thought I was going to be one of the fortunate ones that wouldn't have to deal with the MEAN birds.
