My Blues first attempt the eggs were infertile. I wasn't sure why and was not certain this second nesting would be successful. However, the babies hatched today. Yesterday I got a count and there were six eggs. I had only counted five before, so not sure when she laid the sixth, or if I somehow miscounted. Anyway there are five live young, and one egg.

That's great news kendra! Did you see my post about bluebird nut cafe? There are some really great people over there on that site and it is way more active than garden web. Give it a try :)

Thanks tmann, I do read over there a lot, but was reluctant to join another forum. Each time I do, I tend to get more spam emails. But I will consider it. By the way, there are six beautiful baby bluebirds now.

Frost isn't really an issue here (fortunately!), Patty. I've lived in SF now for nearly 20 years and we haven't gotten down to freezing temps except maybe 2-3 times during that period(?). I recall once in the early '90s we had a hint of snow in the air, but it quickly disappeared by the time it hit the ground. The micro-climates in the region are REALLY intersting. Down the Peninsula or across the GG Bridge in Marin, which may be as close as 5-10 miles away, they may experience frost (sometimes occasionally during the winter!), and SF will always be warmer than these adjacent counties due to the tempering influence of water along its 3 sides. When others are freezing, we usually get no colder than the low 40s, maybe 38F or so at the worst... But the ocean's moderating effect also holds true in the summer - when others are sunny and warm/hot, we are foggy and COLD, and herein is my problem for trying to grow certain kinds of citrus. Oh well, "no pain, no gain", I guess. The only way to truly know whether orange/mandarin varietals will grow in my area is to give it a try, right? I just wished it didn't take the better part of 3 years to derive an answer! I'll keep my fingers crossed that my 'Gold Nugget' will make it through to fruit, as I'm quite keen to taste a mandarin that has such a high reported brix content (up to 17.5%)!

You are in luck as that is not Hoya pubicalyx. I would say Hoya cinnamomifolia or Hoya pupureo-fusca. Both are similar with the flower colour being the only real difference. I think your Hoyas should do well there as a partly shaded South facing window is just about perfect as long as you can keep the plants close to the glass. Is there an overhead light as well? Maybe you could use an energy efficient light bulb and just have that one for a few hours each day to supplement the natural light. Mike

The early plants didn't suffer quite as much this year as in some of the years past. They are all producing now! I've got sooo many cukes and zucchini! It's okay. There is no reason to walk past them on the day that they are prime. If they cannot be used, the chicken like them and the compost is always hungry. (That's my philosophy! ;o) I have had warm-season plants like melons die during June. Just die! The peppers this year are amounting to very, very little because of June . . . I'm surprised that I've already harvested eggplant and they are almost okay - another mortality, some Junes . . . There have been years when a cucumber vine has produced like 1 cucumber for the season. That is mostly June but also a mistake of variety on my part. I grow Lemon Cukes and they run a bit late in production. (Only now are a few to be found amongst the rambunctious vines.) Some years, they will be so delayed that they will run right up against the 1st frost. Did I already say it? It might be quite possible to have the early and the late plantings coming into production at the same time! Maybe 6 weeks difference in planting dates but, ya know . . . having a cucumber to go with a nice ripe tomato, sliced sweet onions, and fresh-from-the-garden sweet corn is pretty special whether it is in August or September. And my real estate agent helped find repair people for certain items on the buyer's punch list for my much less expensive condo without charging me extra in order to get the sale done long distance. I have friends who are real estate agents and they have lists of recommended vendors that they give out gratis to potential clients who are looking to get their homes repaired prior to sale. Calling a vendor off a list isn't that hard for a long-distance seller to do. I did that. Giving the vendor the access code to the house isn't hard either. Your story doesn't make it clear "who" was receiving the proceeds from this sale--your nephew or you. You felt it was worth the money. Well, particularly if it isn't your money that you are spending, I can expecially understand why you didn't mind paying. Some people would be happy to spend the money to avoid any headache regardless, particularly those at the $1 mil plus price point. And given your outlined situation, you had many reasons to need help. So to the extent that you were passing along a nice tip to others, then yes, thank you for letting folks know. But especially in the wake of the recent NAR realtors lawsuit verdict which found that realtors conspired to force sellers to pay excessive fees and awarded $1.8 billion to homeowners, your tip should be tempered to let folks know that there was a big price tag attached to that help. I'm not being rude. I'm providing full disclosure to those who don't do the math or are unknowledgable. Too many older folks get ripped off these days. I'm not suggesting that you were. I'm just reminding people of the price tag for convenience and that there are other options too.

Thats great news kendra, a pair of EABL made a nest this past week and I am waiting for eggs now. I don't get any spam emails from that forum. If you do for some reason, it may be in your forum settings that says "notify me on replys" Looking forward to seeing you there.

how long before your eggs hatched? This is my second nesting and the first one I had 5 babies only 3 survived, I have 5 eggs again in the nest, today is day 14 and still not hatching but the weather has been cooler the last 10 days getting down in the 50's at night and 70's to 80's day the weather was different here for April lots warmer than normal May has been more springy so I hope that is why the eggs haven't hatched yet.

My bird's first nesting attempt they didn't hatch at all. I worried when they were a few days late, but they ended up brooding them for almost two weeks (after hatch was due) until they gave up and started a new nest. Yours still may hatch. I'd give it a few more days. Thankfully their second nesting went just fine. All six fledged at day 17. Took out old nest and there wasn't even a single blow fly larva in it.
