Saw 5 of my baby blues fledge :)

There were 6 eggs in the nest. It was always too cold to monitor the nest box. When it finally got warm enough, I didn't dare check the box cuz the babies were 9-12 days old (didn't know for sure when she started incubating) and I didn't want them to fly out. Anyway 5 made it for sure. I saw them!!!! :)

Congratulations! Don't we always breathe a sigh of relief when we actually see them leave and make it into their brand new world!!???

Yes we do!!! 1 baby SCARED me. It was about to leave the nest and changed his mind. He couldn't get back in the box and not enough room to fly, so he fell to the ground. I went out there to pick him up and mom dive bombed and snapped at me like crazy. Just as I was about to pick it up it flew....so I was really relieved. I will check the box tomorrow to see if there is an egg left in there or I missed the 6th baby leaving.

Congrats Dean on your new blues....I have a question...you mention a second roof and side shield...My Mama is on her second nesting and I'll check today to see if the eggs have hatched...anyway, it's already in the 90's here in east central MS, so now I'm concerned about the heat as well...please explain your box modification...do all of us need to take measures to "cool" the nestbox?? Boy, it seems with each nesting, there's a new concern!!! Thanks and good luck with your new ones! Donna

Babies Fledged Today!

Today = 18 days since 1st 3 baby bluebirds hatched in my frontyard birdhouse and 17 days since the other 2 baby bluebirds hatched. We had a rainstorm late yesterday, so I thought the babies would not come out until this morning. Fortunately, it was a "normal" rainstorm without all the high winds we've had in the last couple of months. I got up very early this morning and I think there is only 1 left in the box. I hear his lonely little sad chirping and have seen the dad bluebird 5 times since 7:00 a.m. come to this one. They could have come more times, but this is all I have seen. The next to last time the dad bluebird just popped his head in the box and did not feed the baby, or I didn't see anything in his mouth to feed as he went in, but the baby quieted down for a while. The last time, he did feed the baby and checked in on him 3 times, and "bonked" his reflection in my window 3 times. He doesn't see me as the room is dark and he sees only the reflection of what is outside. I saw 1 in the backyard kid's playhouse and this one was soaking wet. It could have been that he just got wet from the heavy dew we have here today. The babies seem to love the little shed and kid's playhouse we have because they are also made of the cedar that their house is made of. My husband said that they probably think they are in a giant birdhouse - lol. I hear at least 1 in the tall trees in the woods in back of our house making the same little sounds asking to be fed. I so much wanted to see them fledge this time, but I guess I missed it again. The only thing I can hope is that I can sit where I am in the bedroom window where I have a direct view of the birdhouse opening and hope that this last one fledges today or tomorrow. I'm really not sure he'll be ready to leave until tomorrow, so I've got a long wait in store, especially since I have to be getting ready for my son's wedding.

Hi Michelle, Congrats on the baby blues fledging!!! Those wrens are a pain!!! They have taken over 2 boxes and I just keep pulling twigs. I put out grape jelly 4 the orioles. I get tons of them. This is the first time EVER I have had 3 orioles nesting in my yard. Last year there was 1 nest. They like 2 build in the choke cherry trees. That's where all 3 of them built their nest. Yesterday I could hear the babies cheeping and I kept watching, but the little buggers left when I wasn't watching. They are a joy to be around, and because they built so close to my house, they can hear my voice and they have become quite tame. I mean they will come to the jelly feeder when I'm standing on the porch. I can't wait for them to bring the babies back. If u have orioles around try grape jelly....they LOVE it!! Best of luck!! Donna, the blues had two nestings! The second fledged on 7/3 and it looks like there won't be a 3rd, at least here anyway. I wonder if the same pair who nests twice will seek other housing for #3. You may or may not remember, but Mama had a new mate for #2 due to the death of, and I still refer to him as "Daddy Blue". But much to my delight, the new Dad was very attentive and when the babies were about 12 or 13 days old, he really fed them more than Mom. Makes me kinda sad that nesting season is over for me. Talk about the empty nest syndrome...I've got it bad!!!LOL. Donna

Wonderful news indeed Karen!

That's a big clutch! I know you're both happy and relieved to see them well. Missy's first brood (5) all made it safely to the trees right from the box, and we are relishing their success now... as she has already laid 3 blue eggs in her second nest as of this afternoon.

I can't believe your only an hour away and your always WAY ahead of me...well not ME but your Blues..."we" have only been incubating for 5 days! How were the water works when they left......I am always (as Bet likes to quote) the "blubbering idiot" when they leave...you would think by now, 5 years into this, I would have it together. I will bet you this year will be no different. LOL

No water works Lisa....it's worse. I was watching them through the binocs and I kept saying "come on little blue u can do it, u can do it" and when they left I told them "good job" I told my DH he really should call the people in white coats.

I sat there comforting my little girl with each egg she laid. Breathe honey , it will be ok.....watching her on the tv talkig to her...and RX thinks he LOOKS silly...he has a long way to go! LOL
