What happened?

About three or four weeks ago, I noticed BB action around the house, and we found eggs inside. The chicks hatched and were doing well, and we quit checking on them as we were supposed to once they started getting more feathers to avoid premature fledging. We stopped seeing Mom feeding them, and assumed that they fledged and we missed it. After a morning spent in the garden without seeing and BB action at the box, I opened the box today to clean it out and found a mess. All four chicks were waaaaay past dead. I pulled out the nasty mess and buried everything. I think I will just toss the box and get a new one, unless someone can suggest a good way to clean it. I know I would not want to build in there.

Anyway, I am wondering what happened. Could this have been a HOSP attack? Why else would they stop feeding such large chicks (3 females and 1 male)?
