Bird identification - Wisconsin

Looks similar to a sparrow in size, but with soft muted red on the head and neck region, and when it spreads its wings, there's a red spot I've seen on the back at the base of it's tail. The rest is similar to a female sparrow markings on the body. Hanging out at my suet feeder. I've just seen it for the first time in the past week.

I will try my luck at getting a picture.

After doing more research, I think it's a male common house finch. The red is also on its chest.

Good for you doing the research and trying to find the answer for yourself!! That is what I always do first. Sounds like you have pegged the ID. They may be common, but they are pretty to look at and they sing a pretty song too. I am surprised to hear that it is eating suet though. Mine never go to suet. The other bird that came to my mind was the Common Redpoll, but I don't think they have a red spot on the rump. :o)

I have a small nest in my garden bed tall grass in my front yard that looks just like this with 6 ggs. I am in Louisville Ky. I was cutting the grass back when I saw it. I stopped and tried to move some of the remaining grass back around it. I'm concerned because it's in direct sunlight for most of the day. Will the bird come back to sit on it???

White crowned sparrows have been plentiful during migration this spring. We've had many reports here in MN and I had one in my yard the other day ... something I'd been hoping for the last 5+ years!

Looks like an Orchard Oriole. Their nests are not as pendant as Baltimore Oriole.

I don't live in cardinal country, but it appears to be a juvenile bird that has a fairly dark bill while transitioning plumage. I think this is common, especially during the earlier period of the transition.

Could be a purple finch! I live in Columbus WI the quantity of red is greater the a house finch.
