Just saw my first Blue Gray Gnatcatcher. It hit my patio door then another window and was sitting in my Hydrangea. I never knew they were so small. I think smaller than a Kinglet for sure. Anyway he is OK

What a coincidence! I just saw them for the first time over the weekend. I saw about 6 of them all flitting around together. I didnt know what they were at first because they were so small.

There have been alot of them here too. They make sort of a buzzing/raspy sound.
A couple years ago, my son upon coming back from his run said there was a bird nest of some sort in the branch hanging by the bridge. I went down there and it was a nest of baby Blue Grays, and the mom and dad were around too. I got some pics. Here's one.

Congratulation on seeing your first Hairy, and Happy Birthday too! I also wondered how easy it would be to tell the difference between them and the Downies. This is the first year I've seen Hairies at my suet feeders. They really are huge next to the Downies. And they take no bullying from the Blue Jays like the Downies do. Like you, I was so excited when I saw my first one. It really is cool to see a new bird you haven't seen before. Unlike you, I have not been able to get a decent picture yet. Sometimes one will come to the suet feeder on my deck which should give me a good place to take a picture from. But every time I get my camera, he flies away. I keep trying to get a picture of him next to the Downies on the tree, but so far I have been unsuccessful.

Lisa these little cuties were at the neighbors. I don't understand why they were in the pine trees. The water is about 1/2 mile away. I am sooooo lucky I got 2 c them and get some pictures. I think they r just as cute as they can b!!! Karen

Thanks! When I took these photos, migration was in full swing and the leaves hadn't even started turning yet. Now most of the leaves are gone and the migrants are gone. Birdky members still report them, but mostly south and west of us, usually near large bodies of water. Of course, now the winter birds are returning..saw a large flock of Fox Sparrows on Narnia Ridge this morning

Its not as clear as I would have liked. There were 4 babies in there! I think they flew the coop within a day or 2.

Cathy, maybe I will see one too. It would be a lifer for me as well. That picture is amazing, the nest looks like a hummer nest. I'm gonna keep my eyes open for that little cutie.

OMG Catherine! That photo is so cute!!!!! Karen is right about the nest. I thought it was a Junco at first b/c of the white on the outside of the tail until I saw how small it was. I just love them
