Things have gone from Bad to Worse in the past 24 hours in my backyard nestbox pairs.

I left my sparrow spooker up on a nestbox paired next to my swallows, and the blues prematurely fledged. I took them to a rehab center because the parents disapppeared.

I left it up to protect the swallows. NOW THERE'S DROPPINGS THAT LOOK LIKE A HOSP'S AND GRASS INSIDE IT!!

This is HORRIBLE. 1st account of HOSP getting past a sparrow spooker. TRUST IN SIALIS! YOUR SPARROW SPOOKER is NOT a 100% guarantee of anything!

Tim, you really have to take it down after the bluebirds fledge or the HOSP get used to it. You put it up after first egg is laid and take it down after they fledge.

nicknack, I'm FULLY aware of that. But there are swallows about to fledge in the adjacent paired box and I have no bracket to mount the spooker to. I have 6 boxes, 3 spookers, and this box is the only one w/o a bracket.

Also, I think this same sparrow is at my other pair, where something threw out a single egg that TRES were apparently
incubating.

Don't worry. Once I get this guy with my Van Ert, there'll be no more "not afraid of spooker" sparrows!

Just hadda share about hawks. Came to this forum to ask a bird question but this post subject intrigued me so I hadda check it out. I've had a hawk in my area for several years now, but only seen him in flight or sitting up on top of a dead tree a block away. But what happend the other day was new to me. There's a small tree across the street that all my sparrows fly to after they feed at my front yard feeders. I was out in my garden and guess I got 'lucky.' All of a sudden, I saw a big bird go flying into that tree !! At first I thought it was a pigeon since I have to deal with them, as well. But it turned out to be that hawk !! I say I got lucky, because I feel as others have said, it's nature and I've never seen a hawk THAT close to the ground!! Anyway, birds scattered, flying out of the tree all at once, making a big ruckus. Then out flew few stragglers, then even a few more after that. Seeing some of them taking so long, I was sure he'd snagged one. I took a chance and walked s-l-o-w-l-y across the street to see if he was feasting on one (not to sound morbid, but once again...it's nature). I wasn't even sure he was still in the tree but as I got about three feet away, out he flew and then just stopped and landed on a fence post, only several feet away from me. He even looked over at me as if to say, "HA HA, you can't catch me, but I'll let you SEE me." He was close enough that for the first time in my life, I could see his markings, his eyes, his magnificance. I took a another step closer and of course, he flew away...towards my house, across the neighbor's roof and then off, off and away. But it was a wonderful experience for me. I was so taken aback that I called my mom and said I wish I had a zoom camera ALWAYS hanging around my neck. My camera phone just wouldn't have done justice. I'm glad he didn't get any of my 'babies' and don't wish death on any animal, but it's survival of the fittest. It's the balance of nature. Of course -- I need to state that I DID NOT read every post in this forum so I may be expressing something that is in total opposition to another post or even the topic at hand. Neopyte, I had my dh make my hole reducers, he has a drill press?? at work and used cedar. However I know you can purchase them also, hopefully someone else here will chime in with the where on that one. I had chickadees building last year but was a day late on the hole reducer, the HOPS ran them off. The box they had chosen wasn't one I could put a van ert in and I didn't, at the time, have a spare nestbox to use as a trapbox. Luckily the dees didn't get harmed but I was sad to see them not nest there, coincindentally the Blues ended up nesting in that same box, by that time the HOSP had either been eliminated or left the yard. They usually say to not put the reducer on until the chickadee lays the first egg as they don't care for the 1/8 hole as much but can get into it fine. If you have HOSP around though, I would do it before and hope for the best. Better to be safe than sorry. As far as seed the chickadees love sunflower seeds, hearts and chip or BOSS, the also like peanuts and suet around here. Also it isn't a good idea to put a nestbox near the birdfeeders, too much bird traffic that way. The closest nestbox I have to a feeder is about 50ft, the rest are much further away than that. It is best to point the hole of the nestbox away from prevailing winds, preferabbly towards a tree but away from the way the direction the rain usually blows during the summer months. Donna

NHsuzanne, I don't think there is an actual "decoy box" that you buy, mine is just a basic Bluebird box from Wild Birds unltd that is set up to be used for trapping and not nesting. I purchased a Van ert trap and installed the 2 screws that come with trap inside the box and hung it on the house or a tree in the yard. When a male HOSP claimed the box, then I would install the trap itself onto the screws and set it. I put a piece of black electrical tape over the orange dot on the trap, and taped a few blades of dried grass to the trip mechanism so the HOSP wouldn't notice the trap. It worked great.

I wanted to add one more thing,I always recommend having 2 houses up,just in case a HOSP comes along,That way the Blues will always have another house to go to ,rather then leaving the area,If there is a HOSP trying to use one of my houses ,The Blues can go to the other,while I deal with the HOSP.I never let a HOSP hang around too long,before I trap him,I have found that many times even after you get the HOSP,the Blues will not return to the house(during that season) were they had a confrontation with a HOSP.Just something to think about,That is what I have found works for me.If a HOSP does show up,He is my number 1 priority.

Tim, you sure have had your challenges. I sure hope you get the one that's not afraid of the spooker. I have never had one get past a box with a spooker on it. I sure hope you catch him before he teaches any others not to fear it.

Tim! You can fashion a spooker out of the skinny wooden dowels at the hardware store, you'll need cable ties or duct tape to put them into the "T" position and then duct tape the mylar streamers. If your boxes are wooden you can screw in two little eye hooks or something to the back of the box then cable tie the dowel to the box. If you make them like that you'll have spookers for every box and you only have to keep buying the mylar banners from the dollar store. Like Nicknack said they need to come down right after fledging so these b******s don't become tolerant. Cable tie or duct tape something to the tres box temporarily till you get situated. Right know my spookers are all gunked together due to the rain which makes me real paranoid. Yesterday I ran down my driveway in the rain like a wild beast 'cause I swore there was hosp intrusion at a box but it was just tres relatives going in the box causing a ruckus. I'll relax when the wind dries out the streamers and they unfurl. Good luck Tim, Sue

Hope things are looking better Tim, I use plain old wooden hot dog sticks, duct tape & iridescent sparkly gift wrap ribbon. ((( )))!

The good news everyone is that the TRES all fledged successfully! Glad Mr. HOSP didn't decided to intervene.
I will take a look at dowels and other materials I would need and maybe make more. Just seems to me that it would be hard for a home-made spooker to survive the weather.

Kendra, I got the one that was trying to use the boxes where my new bluebird pair is hanging out. I hope maybe it was him, but today I found more noodle droppings in one of the boxes...

Sue, doesn't that just annoy the heck out of you?? I hear the TRES going crazy and the 1st thought that pops up is "HAWK!!!" but then I see the swarm of swallows. But they ARE good at alerting other birds to our hawks!

Also guys, I now have SIX HOSP fledglings in my DRST! The thing is sucking them up!! And they came from the neighbor who let HOSP from the DRST previously. All have trimmed wings. Plus 1 male who I'm contemplating ending.

There are always more to fill the void, so we have to continue trapping them. When I take mine in nightly to dispose of them I always leave a fresh - hopefully male & 1 or 2 others for tomorrow's decoys. I cover the trap w/an old towel until I put the trap out next morning, adding fresh bread, crackers, water. Keep up your good work.
