Carolina wren laying on Blubird eggs?

I have a nest in a small tree in my backyard. For the past week and a half a Carolina wren has been sitting in it on top of three Blubird eggs. She sits around the clock. Her mate is also close by. I didn't see a bird make the nest or lay the eggs though. What is going on?

A nest in a tree would not be a Blue Bird nest unless it's in a hole in the tree. I assume the eggs are blue? Can you describe the nest? I believe California Wren eggs are kind a pink, so they arent her eggs. Can you get a picture?

Carolina Wrens are cavity nesters like Bluebirds. If the nest is a cup nest in the crotch of a tree like a robins then it isn't a Carolina Wren or Bluebird's nest

Tamgirl, I'm not sure what you mean by a hatchery, but, no, I don't have one. I live on 5 1/2 acres of mostly wooded property, so there are host plants all over the place. My passionvines are mostly growing on the hurricane fence that surrounds my garden and on the wood picket fence around the front "yard". I've released 45-50 gulf frits this month, so I had decided to leave the cats on the vines. After seeing the wren pecking at the chrysalis, I've changed my mine, and now I'm bringing in eggs and hatchlings to raise in the cages on my covered porch like I did those I've already released. I guess you could call my cages my hatcheries. This is the first time I've seen a bird showing interest in eating a caterpillar or chrysalis, although I'm aware that the cuckoos come here to eat tent caterpillars, I just don't see them doing it. Out here in the woods, there are SO many insects - people who live in town can't imagine how thick they are here - and birds have all them to eat plus sunflower seeds, and the hummers feed at my hummingbird feeders. I guess that's why they don't need to bother caterpillars much, but maybe the wrens saw easy pickings and decided to partake! Sherry

Eggs of BB Nest Destroyed 2nd Time

Sounds like you really have some challenges. You have my sympathies! A tiny poked hole is more likely a house wren's thin sharp beak, sometimes taking them some distance away, or simply tossing them out. The house sparrow will toss the eggs out, but their finch-like beak would not as likely make a tiny poke hole. And the HOSP is more likely to stick around, harass, or even take over the cavity. "Do BB's destroy their own eggs" ... No "the nest possibly could have been flooded?" ... are there leaks that could be fixed? "Are the HOSP really sneaky" ... yes, but HOWR are sneakier ... "and resistant to the Sparrow Spooker?" ... yes, and house wrens will not be deterred by a sparrow spooker. House Wrens are even sneakier, faster and silent, leaving no evidence behind, only destroying eggs or young. You might hear them singing, but might never, ever see them! There are some links to sound files of house wren song and chatter on Bet's web pages, so you can learn to hear the unwelcome sounds of house wrens. Visit Bet's web page for more info. And by the way, the Carolina Wren is a very different bird, welcome almost anywhere; not a threat to other birds. BlueBars Here is a link that might be useful: http://www.sialis.org/index.html

A Question about A Carolina Wren Nest and Eggs

Hi! A couple weeks ago we noticed 2 Carolina wrens building their nest in our fern right outside of our kitchen window. We were so excited! Then a few days ago we no longer saw them around and sadly thought that they had abandoned their nest. This morning we were talking about removing the nest from the fern and when I peeked, I saw 5 eggs! Now we are concerned if they have abandoned their eggs :( Is this possible? We haven't seen them around at all. What time of the day do they incubate? Would it be possible that we are missing their timing? We are not morning risers. Agh! I'd be so sad if by any chance we scared them away :( We have been very respectful, however sometimes we would open the window. I do not know how long the eggs have been there. I thought that as soon as they were close to being done building their nest, they had left. Do they first build and then lay their eggs? Thank you so much!

I will take pictures. I am positive it is a carolina wren. The eggs are to dark to be robins eggs. It is the clutch of the tree. I think it's a small crabapple tree. The nest is only 7ft up. She's gotten use to me and will let me be a foot away. I know that none of this makes sense. Maybe she is just confused. Wrong nest, wrong eggs,?

It will be interesting to see what you really do have there. Just remember birds do not always read the books and follow instructions. If you DO have a Carolina Wren on Blue Bird eggs in a cup nest in a tree Cornell and everybody else is gonna want to know about it. That would be doubly rare indeed. This is a good mystery.

I am very curious to see what you have too. Bluebird eggs are lighter blue than Robin eggs. Catbird eggs are a teal blue in color and are darker than Robin eggs. There are actually quite a few birds with blue eggs. Can't wait to see photos.
