Carolina wren laying on Blubird eggs?

I have a nest in a small tree in my backyard. For the past week and a half a Carolina wren has been sitting in it on top of three Blubird eggs. She sits around the clock. Her mate is also close by. I didn't see a bird make the nest or lay the eggs though. What is going on?

A nest in a tree would not be a Blue Bird nest unless it's in a hole in the tree. I assume the eggs are blue? Can you describe the nest? I believe California Wren eggs are kind a pink, so they arent her eggs. Can you get a picture?

Carolina Wrens are cavity nesters like Bluebirds. If the nest is a cup nest in the crotch of a tree like a robins then it isn't a Carolina Wren or Bluebird's nest

sorry- she most likely was scared off. I think they're very cautious birds to begin with so she may be too terrified to return. They're very vocal at this time of year; if she's still around you would've heard her by now. I would leave the nest just in case she or a house wren shows up....

Sounds like you really have some challenges. You have my sympathies! A tiny poked hole is more likely a house wren's thin sharp beak, sometimes taking them some distance away, or simply tossing them out. The house sparrow will toss the eggs out, but their finch-like beak would not as likely make a tiny poke hole. And the HOSP is more likely to stick around, harass, or even take over the cavity. "Do BB's destroy their own eggs" ... No "the nest possibly could have been flooded?" ... are there leaks that could be fixed? "Are the HOSP really sneaky" ... yes, but HOWR are sneakier ... "and resistant to the Sparrow Spooker?" ... yes, and house wrens will not be deterred by a sparrow spooker. House Wrens are even sneakier, faster and silent, leaving no evidence behind, only destroying eggs or young. You might hear them singing, but might never, ever see them! I have a Carolina wren nest under my porch, and I came here looking here for the same thing you are asking. One day, there were 4 eggs. The next morning, there are only 3. The mama continues to come back, and all three eggs left are almost ready to hatch. But I don't know what could have happened. I have a feeling it's not a snake or another bird, but I could know less about what's happened. We have broadhead skinks, but I don't know if they would eat bird eggs

Because of the time frame, are you sure any that hatched didn't already fledge? I would count the eggs. It could be that none of them hatched, but maybe some did and fledged? If the eggs were fertile, they should have hatched weeks ago.

I will take pictures. I am positive it is a carolina wren. The eggs are to dark to be robins eggs. It is the clutch of the tree. I think it's a small crabapple tree. The nest is only 7ft up. She's gotten use to me and will let me be a foot away. I know that none of this makes sense. Maybe she is just confused. Wrong nest,wrong eggs,?

It will be interesting to see what you really do have there. Just remember birds do not always read the books and follow instructions. If you DO have a Carolina Wren on Blue Bird eggs in a cup nest in a tree Cornell and everybody else is gonna want to know about it. That would be doubly rare indeed. This is a good mystery.

I am very curious to see what you have too. Bluebird eggs are lighter blue than Robin eggs. Catbird eggs are a teal blue in color and are darker than Robin eggs. There are actually quite a few birds with blue eggs. Can't wait to see photos.
