TRES nesting question

Hi all! I have TRES nesting for the first time. They are in a gourd. I have been reading about the HOSP's bothering nesting TRES, and I am wondering whether there is a special type of gourd entrance which would keep the HOSP's out. I would like to stay one step ahead of the little vermin birds if I can. This gourd has a standard crescent entrance on it now.

Not that I'm aware of. Gourds are not a good choice unless you plan on having Purple Martins b/c you cannot use a sparrow spooker or a wren guard on them. They will not only bother them they will kill parents eggs and young. I have seen it many times. Go to www.sialis.org to see sparrow spookers. They are easy to make and super effective but can only be used after the first egg is laid.

Thanks Cathy. We are trying to get Purple Martins, and the TRES chose a gourd on that rack. We just moved their gourd
about 25 feet off to the side of the Purple Martin pole. I already have a spooker for my BB box. I suppose I could rig one up for the gourd too. TRES don't mind the spookers?

I live in Northern VA and have TRES for the first time this year. I actually have seen up to 6 TRES at a time checking out my boxes. I think I have a pair interested as they sit on the box and go in and out but no nest or anything. In fact, whenever we have a cold or rainy day (like today in the 50's and rain) they seem to disappear. As soon as we have a nice day, they come back. I don't know specifically about Michigan, but here in VA, nothing yet. I also have HOSP and they visit my yard frequently. I am currently trapping with an Inbox trap and have gotten 1 so far. I am ready for any more that may come. I am hoping to get a bunch so they can't harass my cavity nesters. Good luck with your TRES! Alison Leesburg, VA

Unfortunately I think it may already be too late for the TRES. They had their eggs taken out by most likely a HOWR or HOSP, although I did see the Blues on top of the house before I went out and found that the TRES eggs were gone; is it possible the Blues took out the TRES eggs? I am still trying as hard as possible to kill those Sparrows. Let me tell you, they have become so smart and sneaky! When I see them go into the house, I run out and cover it with a pillow case and stand out there for about 10 minutes shaking the box to get them to come out. I eventually give up, but I never even see them come out of the house anyways. I can't tell when they're in the house or out, and when I see them on the ground and get my pellet gun, they're gone in a flash. And I went out to get their eggs, but holy heck, they have the most ugly and messy nest I have ever seen from a HOSP. It doesn't even look like a nest, just a box crammed with junk. I don't even know if I can find the eggs in there. I will keep trying, and I won't give up till I succeed. Thanks for your help.

Katie..It is a Tree Swallow, very beautiful and swift bird! I have a nest that I know has 5 11 day old eggs, Mom refuses to get off the nest so I can see if there were any more laid. This is one good Mom. Wonder if she will let me see in there to get a hatching/fledging date! Hey they are her kids so she gets to call the shots. I have approximate dates, that may just have to do.

Donna, glad to hear your remaing TRES are doing well. Also glad your Sisters are back. The Dragon Flys are finally out so I know "my" babies will be fine. It's so nice to see the parent just have to make a 30 second loop around the house and come back with a bug. Poor thing had been making 30-40 minutes trips there for a few days. I will get one last peek at them tomorrow then have to just listen to them till fledge day. My Dees are a few days behind yours and my Blues are nearly done with the new nest for round 2. Life is good. ;D

I just read that an opening 7/8"th tall and 2" wide will allow the TRES access but not the HOSPs. I am modifying a box today to try , my TRES have not started a nest yet and I have a pesky HOSP that I have not gotten yet so I will try this box until I get him! Can you modify the entrance of the gourd? I heard this type of entrance was first used for the Martins.

Tres take to spookers just fine. Trapping is still helpful tho. I wish I had the time and money to host PUMAS. Maybe in the future.

Thanks a bunch Cathy. This is helpful info. I will just rig up a spooker for the TRES gourd. I know that keeps the HOSP's away. This is my 3rd season trying for Purple Martin's. Lots of people seem to get them on the 3rd season. I am really hopeful. I have certainly done my research and provided the best and safest site that I possibly could have. Now, time will tell.

The Tree Swallows I hosted last year didn't seem to mind the sparrow spooker a bit. You could even rig one of those mylar party decorations with a wire to hang over the gourd.

Thanks Cathy. We are really hopeful this year. We had Purple Martins to visit our site for the past 2 years. We made some changes this year which should do the trick. Now, it's up to the martins to decide whether or not to stay. Who knew that it could be so hard to get one species of bird to nest in your yard?
