2nd time is the charm --3 of 4 eggs hatched!

After loosing the the first nesting of 4 eggs to a wren, a 2nd pair of blue birds set up house in my yard. Today, 3 of 4 eggs are hatched. Just want to share the good news, thanks for all your help!

The blue bird originally layed 5 eggs, but only 4 eggs left 2 days later. Don't know what happened.

Great news Sara! Do you have a wren guard on the box? If you lost the first nesting to wrens and now an egg is missing, could the wren have gotten that egg and got interrupted before it did more damage? I sure hope those babies make it ok, wrens can and will toss hatchlings up to six days old out of the nest. Good luck!

newbie_in_nj, Those are the flowers of Sedum album. You may not want this one unless you don't mind it taking over. It would be a perfect one to take over a slope but not garden friendly. I've been ripping it out for years, but the smallest leaf to hit the soil (and many do fall while being ripped out) will start a whole new bunch of plants :O The snaps probably had 'Black Prince' as a parent, but couldn't tell you who the other parent might have been...the flower color is different on mine. I collected the seed from the campus I was a student on. These particular snaps seem to be the most hardy for me, but have had others winter over as well... just not as long :) I started some Snap 'Red and White' this year (not yet blooming) and these were one of the original parents of 'Black Prince'...so now I guess we're having a family reunion LOL!! I've been beaten to the punch,lol, but I'll name an experience. I had eggs that didn't hatch during the 12-14 day period. 2 days later still nothing, and I thought they were goners. Sure enough, I open that box to find new, healthy, hatched bluebirds! I'd give it a little time. The birds may eventually figure it out too. If they abandon or re-lay, I'd examine the old eggs to find out what was wrong with them. ~Tim~

Sounds like you really have some challenges. You have my sympathies! A tiny poked hole is more likely a house wren's thin sharp beak, sometimes taking them some distance away, or simply tossing them out. The house sparrow will toss the eggs out, but their finch-like beak would not as likely make a tiny poke hole. And the HOSP is more likely to stick around, harass, or even take over the cavity. "Do BB's destroy their own eggs" ... No "the nest possibly could have been flooded?" ... are there leaks that could be fixed? "Are the HOSP really sneaky" ... yes, but HOWR are sneakier ... "and resistant to the Sparrow Spooker?" ... yes, and house wrens will not be deterred by a sparrow spooker. House Wrens are even sneakier, faster and silent, leaving no evidence behind, only destroying eggs or young. You might hear them singing, but might never, ever see them! Thank you! The 4th egg hatched in the afternoon of the same day.

Donna, the wren guard has been up since the second egg. It's not perfectly vertical, like you and I had discussed in my previous posting.

I remember read it somewhere tht guard should come off certain days after the eggs hatched. Any one know when?

Ok, that is good! I remember now. You can take it off after the blues are 7 days old but you can leave it up a bit longer if you would like. I would have it off by day 10 though. I have a wren guard on my Blues nest this year as they chose a box more in the wren territory (don't have a wren but they can show up at any time) and I wanted to be safe about it. I did it in steps...first just the front, then a short side, then a longer side...she accepted it no problem and laid six beautiful blue eggs... a first for me, never had six before, always 4 or 5.

Glad that last egg hatched!
