Bird Watching

Bird watching is indeed a wonderful experience. You feel closer to nature and you get a peace in your mind and heart. I always watch birds and feel like flying them free in the air.

The bird in the picture doesn't look like it has that peace of mind.

I love to do birdwatching in my holidays. Most of the time I rent a holiday home for me and my family, last year I stayed here and I was pretty satisfied when the children were playing in the backyard and I could sit in peace in the front of the house and listen to the birds. Birdsong is something peaceful. I agree in this point with alishekarfroush. It is nourishing for the soul to listen to the sound of nature - and only this sound. No cars, no planes, no neighbours shouting at each other. That moment during our holiday, when I sat in front of the holiday home, is my peronal perfect moment of the year 2010.

I also had the chance to see some special birds, for instance a hazel grouse - and since my favourites are the predator birds - I was especially excited when I saw a black kite.

What are your favourite birds to watch, by the way? I simply like the keen look of the predator birds, the way they are focused on their prey and their amazing energy when they attempt to get a catch. They are not the best singers, but BEAUTIFUL. Not in the same way as peacocks or flamingos of course. They have an elegance of their own. However, the song of the nightingale is much more thrilling. Did someone already manage to see one?

Okay great! Wheres the cheapest place to buy these in bulk? Costco also had a filler seed with their sunflower. I have to steralize ir in the oven now so it doesnt sprout anymore.

I've used a product called flash tape to discourage a cardinal from attacking my window. What I used was about an inch wide, red on one side and silver on the other. I thumbtacked it in a big X across the window, twisting gently so it's in a spiral. I've used this to protect seedlings from birds as well. I got it at the hardware. Cheap, easy -- it will look goofy on your window but shouldn't take many days to discourage him. Arlene

Man, I have been MIA for a while. You guys posted some great pics!! Andrea, I love seeing the chipmunk and bright yellow finches. I finally saw some yellow finches the other day, but they haven't been staying around for long. My thistle feeder barely gets touched and I bought fresh seed too. Ok, it's time for me to make some wreaths or suet - Yours have inspired me!!!! Hopefully soon! The birds are eating like crazy right now so I know they would be a huge hit! Andrea, I almost bought that same looking hummingbird feeder the other day. I just wasn't sure if I was ready for "hummingbirds" though lol - I feel like I have so much going on feeding the other birds.. I just don't know if I should take on more... PLUS>>>> yesterday was my birthday and my dad surprised me with a HUGE bird house that is anchored to a tree!!! Now, I love feeding the birds, but I don't know if I want to house them too!!! LOL.. But I have to put this bird house in the backyard.. This will be a new journey. I'll try to post pics. My hubby has to dig a hole and pour concrete because the birdhouse is so big!!! YIKES!! My dad was driving one day and saw this thing on the side of the road - some guy makes them locally. Royals fan-MO6a - I love the Oriole pics!! Thanks for sharing! catherinet - hahaha yes I like the idea of giving out bird seed mixes around Christmas.. it's cold out and the birds will certainly enjoy it!! Oh, and we'll save some calories ourselves hahaha --------------------------------------------------------- okay here's a sneak peak of the bird house.. I'm telling you this sucker is huge. Hubby carrying it in- Below is a different bird house that the same guy made. This isn't the one I have. It's just an example of his work. My bird house has a lot brighter colors.. I may tweak that some day hahahaha...
