Bird Watching

Was sitting here thinking what a boring year it is at my feeders with mainly sparrows visiting, and noticed a Junco. The second one I've seen this year, so he must be visiting daily, I'll assume.

So I went outside and put a tray of suet out there. He didn't visit the hanging suet, but was foraging below as they usually do.

Hopefully they'll be back before the squirrels finish it off.

Much more excitement at our feeders two hours north of Milwaukee at our cottage.

I read a lot of people saying the birds go nuts when they bring suet outside. For me, they take off and don't come back for awhile. ZERO chickadees this winter in the city for me.

I live in snowy Saskatchewan and my feeders this year have been very busy. I have about 40 common redpolls and one or two hoary redpolls (I believe). I made some home-made suet and the chickadees love it. I have some bought suet right beside it but the chickadees and the downy woodpecker that comes to visit like the home-make stuff. When I didn't have the home-make suet, the chickadees did eat the bought suet. However, the redpolls will eat both. I also had some red-breasted nuthatches visiting but I haven't seen them for a week now. And my real surprise is a male and female house finch that come everyday. I believe they usually go south for the winter but this pair has decided to stay the winter. They love my shelled BOSS. The chickadees and woodpecker also like the shelled peanuts I provide. It's been the best winter for me in regard to lots of birds. The redpolls empty my feeder in less than 2 days and it holds about 6 cups of shelled seeds, so I'm kept busy filling it every second day.

I'm just outside Milwaukee and chickadee have been here all season along with juncos, nuthatches, cardinals (7 at once one day) and various sparrows and finches to name a few. Black oil sunflower being the seed of choice.

Okay great! Wheres the cheapest place to buy these in bulk? Costco also had a filler seed with their sunflower. I have to steralize ir in the oven now so it doesnt sprout anymore.

Great shots. He may be drinking and bathing. Red tail hawks aren't agile enough to catch very many birds. they are more likely to dive onto bunnies and rodents.

I've used a product called flash tape to discourage a cardinal from attacking my window. What I used was about an inch wide, red on one side and silver on the other. I thumbtacked it in a big X across the window, twisting gently so it's in a spiral. I've used this to protect seedlings from birds as well. I got it at the hardware. Cheap, easy -- it will look goofy on your window but shouldn't take many days to discourage him. Arlene

I'm really unhappy with my Swarovski binocs. They are great to look through, but the lens covers never stay on - the ones that cover the large end not only don't stay on to cover the lens, but the whole thing falls off...I've lost so many that I finally gave up. The hard plastic cover that covers the eyeball side of the lenses also seems to be a poor design. they were so expensive, I'd really like to keep the lenses from scratching, but it's impossible. I would never buy these again.

I'm in West Allis, Wisconsin. Where last winter the birds here became somewhat scarce, they are hitting my feeders full force. Lots of chickadees, downies, juncos, and more recently a red-bellied woodpecker has been showing up. BOSS and suet seem to be the favorites, though the cardinals and house finches prefer to go for safflower first.
