Beware of wire grate at bottom of bluebird box

We were thrilled when bluebirds laid eggs in one of our bluebird boxes. Unfortunately, one of the baby birds legs fell through a wire grate that was placed at the bottom of the box to keep the nest 1" above the bottom of the box. The baby ended up dying because it's leg became infected and swollen. We didn't check on the babies because we were afraid we would scare off the parents. After 2-3 of the babies fledged, we noticed the parents kept coming back to the box (we learned to feed the trapped baby who couldn't get it's leg out of the grate.) Today we finally checked the box and saw the baby died earlier that day. We cleaned out the box and removed the wire grate. BEWARE OF THIS GRATE AND REMOVE IT FROM BLUEBIRD NEST BOXES.

Great news, however. The parents are again building another nest in the cleaned out box. Apparantly, they can have 1-3 clutches each season. We're definately going to be checking on the babies this time.
